Griezmann attempting to find his feet on rocky ground at Barca Barcelona (AFP) – Antoine Griezmann said he knew it would be tough settling in at Barcelona but it may have proven harder than he thought. Barca play at home to Inter Milan on Wednesday looking for lift-off in the Champions League after a goalless draw against Borussia Dortmund made for an underwhelming start to their latest bid for success in Europe.  Griezmann also has something to prove after two steady but unspectacular months, elevated by moments rather than the consistency Ernesto Valverde would have hoped for when the Frenchman’s 120-million euro release clause was activated last summer.  “Against Bilbao he was not as involved as we would like,” Valverde said at the start of the season. “But it is also up to the team to allow our strikers to participate more.”  When Griezmann scored twice in the next game, against Real Betis, before tossing glitter above his head at Camp Nou, it felt like he had made his big introduction and not just because of the theatrics.  But five La Liga games have since brought only one more goal and assist while a handful of rather muted displays have left a sense of a player finding his feet, despite excelling in La Liga for the past nine seasons.  After last week’s win over Villarreal, Griezmann was asked about his start at Barcelona. “It’s different,” he said. “It’s a different type of football, a different position and I knew it was going to be difficult to adjust.  “But I feel like I’m improving every game and that’s it. Three goals, it’s not bad right? I can do better but I just arrived. I work for the team and if I can score or assist, even better.”  Griezmann has reason to defend himself. He joined a team that after five games had posted its lowest points total in 25 years, with last season’s collapse against Liverpool still lingering, not least for Valverde, whose future is never secure.  He also arrived as one of the world’s premium strikers but found his new club pursuing Neymar for the duration of the summer, as if the Brazilian might add something he could not.  There were relationships to repair too, with Barcelona’s fans and players, after Griezmann not only turned them down 12 months before but embarassed them, by announcing his decision in a documentary.  – Inconsistency – “I’ve spent very little time with him to be honest,” Lionel Messi told Diario Sport last month. “Since I returned, I’ve been injured and training on my own.

Nagelsmann, Werner on the rise for ambitious Leipzig Berlin (AFP) – With coach Julian Nagelsmann touted as the next Jurgen Klopp or Pep Guardiola and striker Timo Werner providing the goals, ambitious RB Leipzig target a home Champions League win over Lyon on Wednesday in their bid to reach the last 16. Leipzig flew out of the blocks a fortnight ago when Germany international Werner, 23, scored twice in a 2-1 win at Benfica to top Group G, while Lyon drew 1-1 at home to Zenit St Peterburg.  “It’s not like we’re here to make up the numbers, we want to get out of the group,” said Werner who targets home victories over Lyon, Zenit, and Benfica. “If we win those games, and we can beat anyone at home, then we will almost have a foot in the last 16. That has to be our goal.” Ambitious words for an ambitious club during only their second Champions League campaign. “The key is that we have more experienced players on the pitch, who know what it’s all about,” assured attacker Emil Forsberg.  Their 2017-18 competition debut ended in disappointment when they finished third in the group, dropping to the Europa League where they reached the quarter finals. – Points to prove – Nagelsmann, 32, and Werner have points to prove against Lyon after the harsh reality check of Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat by Schalke cost them top spot in the Bundesliga. Despite his tally of seven goals so far this term, Werner has not scored in the three games since the Benfica win, while by his own admission, Nagelsmann lost his composure against Schalke. “You could tell that he’s a guy who doesn’t like to lose,” said captain Willi Orban. “That was not typical RB football”. Werner and Nagelsmann epitomise the club’s aspirations to consistently challenge in the Bundesliga and become a force in Europe, backed by energy drinks firm Red Bull. Werner could have spoken for Nagelsmann in admitting “I am not world class yet, no, and I’m working on getting to that level.” His role model is Robert Lewandowski and persistent rumours suggest Bayern Munich have ear-marked Werner, who signed a new contract in August, to eventually replace their star striker. Leipzig are only in their fourth year in Germany’s top tier and this is Nagelsmann’s first season in charge. The club regard him as a rising coaching star who is set to reach the same elite level as Liverpool’s Klopp or Manchester City’s Guardiola.

Conte’s back-to-basics style paying off at Inter ahead of Barca trip Milan (AFP) – Antonio Conte has returned to Italian football in style with Inter Milan flying high under his back-to-basics guidance, ahead of a Champions League trip to Barcelona that will test the Serie A leaders’ continental credentials. Conte’s side stretched their perfect league start to six wins from six for the first time in 53 years at the weekend with a 3-1 win at Sampdoria that came despite having to play most of the second half a man down. They are two points ahead of fierce rivals Juventus as they await a top-of-the-table clash at the San Siro on Sunday. Meanwhile Inter head for Catalonia on Wednesday off the back of a shaky start in Group F, a 1-1 draw against Slavia Prague salvaged late after a below-par performance that contrasted sharply with their domestic form. Conte — reportedly the highest-paid coach in Italy with a salary of 10 million euros ($10.8m) a year — believes his side are flourishing because he simplifies the game. “I am a coach who always gives a precise idea of football to his team. I seem to set the trend in tactics,” said the former Chelsea and Juventus coach. “My football has always been organised, we have an idea and work hard on a range of scenarios. “All our performances this season have shown quality and organisation, but mentality makes the difference in getting out of tricky situations.” Helenio Herrera was the last man to lead Inter to win six straight matches from the start of a league season back in 1966-1967, the three-time Serie A winner having also established them as a continental force with European Cup wins in 1964 and 1965. Conte is bidding to claim the club’s first league title since 2010, the year they won an historic treble under rival coach Jose Mourinho. “We must now press the reset button, focus on Barcelona at Camp Nou,” insisted Conte, whose last trip to Barcelona with Chelsea ended in a 3-0 defeat in March 2018. “We’re getting into the right frame of mind, but we sill have to grow a lot. We’re newborns in this project.” – ‘Newborns’ – Conte has remodelled the club he took over after a rollercoaster two years under predecessor Luciano Spalletti — who brought Inter back to the Champions League on the final day of each of the last two seasons — bringing in 11 newcomers in the summer.

Salzburg’s youngster Haaland set to shine at Anfield Oslo (AFP) – Salzburg’s red-hot teenage striker Erling Braut Haaland, will have the chance to measure himself against Liverpool’s dazzling collection of attackers on Wednesday, if he is fit to play. The Austrian club’s sporting director Christoph Freund said on Sunday that the 19-year-old has been ill and may not feature against the European champions at Anfield but there will be many beyond the confines of Merseyside who pray that he is wrong. After an explosive start to Haaland’s Champions League career, fans want to see more of the Norwegian. “He’s going to become one of the best strikers in the world,” said Salzburg team-mate Maximilian Woeber. “He’s just phenomenal.” Haaland set the first round of Champions League games alight when he hit a first-half hat-trick as Salzburg pulverised Genk 6-2 to top Group E ahead of Napoli, who beat Liverpool on the same night. At 19 years and 58 days, Haaland became the third youngest man to score a hat-trick in the Champions League since its revamp in 1992. Raul was just 18 years and 114 days when he did it in 1995 for Real Madrid against Ferencvaros while Wayne Rooney was 18 years and 340 days when he marked his debut in the competition with a treble for Manchester United against Fenerbahce in September 2004. Imposing Haaland, who stands 1.94m tall, has been in scintillating form since moving from Molde to Salzburg in January, has scored 17 times in 10 appearances. In May in the under-20 World Cup, he hammered nine goals in one match as Norway humiliated Honduras 12-0. In spite of his record and his undoubted potential, Haaland is not a regular starter for Salzburg.  Five days after his star turn against Genk, he was on the bench at Linz in the Austrian League. He was not even in the squad for the two subsequent wins over Austria Vienna, one in the cup and one in the league. – Someone has to replace Zlatan – The young gun is just as confident in his abilities as his teammates are. Asked to name his favourite player by Norwegian TV he answered, with a smile: “I have to say ‘it’s me'”, before adding a slight caveat. “Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the biggest one. He is Scandinavian, so someone has to take over from him,” he said. His profile is inevitably attracting interest from Europe’s wealthiest clubs. “All my life, I have dreamed of playing for one of the best clubs in the world, and I particularly like English football,” he said.

New England, Real Salt Lake seal MLS playoff berths Washington (AFP) – Canadian winger Teal Bunbury’s goal in the 66th minute Sunday launched the New England Revolution into the Major League Soccer playoffs while Real Salt Lake joined the post-season parade by defeating Houston. Bunbury, whose Guyana-born father was a Canadian international, netted the pivotal goal and Argentine teammate Gustavo Bou added an insurance marker in the 89th minute as the Revolution beat visiting New York City FC 2-0. The victory gave New England the final Eastern Conference playoff spot and eliminated Chicago, Orlando and Montreal from post-season contention. With one week remaining in the 2019 MLS campaign, NYCFC has sealed the top East spot with defending champion Atlanta United ahead of Philadelphia for second on goal difference. DC United ranks fourth in the East after a goal-less draw with the New York Red Bulls but could still be overtaken by the Bulls or Toronto in the final game and the Revs still able to move up a spot or two in the last week. Real Salt Lake edged visiting Houston 2-1 on Venezuelan striker Jefferson Savarino’s goal in the 75th minute. Corey Baird put Real on top in the opening seconds but the Dynamo equalized on Argentine striker Tomas Martinez’s goal in the 32nd minute. Los Angeles FC has clinched the best record in MLS this season and the top spot in the Western Conference but Real Salt Lake has a chance to move up. Minnesota and Seattle, both on 53 points, meet next week to settle second place with the Los Angeles Galaxy fourth and Real Salt Lake fifth. Portland ranks sixth in the West on 46 points after drawing Kansas City 2-2, the Timbers one ahead of FC Dallas in the final playoff position. Chasing from the outside are San Jose on 44 points after a 1-0 loss to Seattle and the Colorado Rapids on 42 points after a 3-0 win over Dallas. San Jose will visit Portland next Sunday on the final day of the season while Dallas hosts Kansas City and Colorado visits LAFC. The Rapids would need to upset the league’s winningest team on the road and have Kansas City beat Dallas by enough combined goals to overcome a minus-five goal differential with the Texas club and have San Jose lost to Portland as well to reach the playoffs.

Alli faces uncertain future as Spurs splutter London (AFP) – Hampered by injuries and poor form, Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli faces an uncertain future while his club are battling to recover from their own troubling period. In a clear indication of the malaise gripping Alli, the England international is far from certain to feature when Tottenham host Bayern Munich in a crucial Champions League clash on Tuesday. That would have been unthinkable just two years ago when Alli was regarded as one of Europe’s rising stars. Since then, the 23-year-old has been stuck in a steady decline that raises questions about his long-term future in north London. After appearing in four of Tottenham’s five pre-season games, Alli was absent for the final friendly against Inter Milan due to the latest in a long line of hamstring issues. Having missed games against Aston Villa, Manchester City and Newcastle, Alli was introduced on the hour for the 2-2 draw at Arsenal on September 1. But that remains Alli’s lone Premier League action this term, with his two other appearances coming in two of Tottenham’s most underwhelming displays of the current campaign. He was hauled off after 73 minutes of 2-2 Champions League draw at Olympiakos, with Tottenham reeling having blown a two-goal lead. Alli’s current lowly place in Pochettino’s pecking order was clear for all to see when he was forced to start in under-strength Tottenham side for their League Cup third round tie at minnows Colchester last week. That Alli delivered a limp performance in Tottenham’s shock penalty shoot-out defeat suggested Pochettino had been correct to use his playmaker so little. Alli’s anonymous display in the depths of Essex was a fry cry from arguably the finest night of his career when his brace inspired Tottenham’s 3-1 Champions League group stage victory over Real Madrid in November 2017. Alli was hailed as Tottenham’s next generational talent after a swaggering show capped by an impudent nutmeg of Real defender Sergio Ramos. Yet since his star role in handing Madrid their first group stage loss for five years, Alli has been stuck in a rut. Cutting an increasingly peripheral figure in Tottenham’s midfield, Alli’s form was a concern for Mauricio Pochettino for much of last season. – Rare highlight – Although Alli’s assist led to Tottenham’s dramatic semi-final second leg winner for Lucas Moura at Ajax, that was a rare highlight. Alli was a passenger when Tottenham’s first Champions League final ended in an oddly lethargic 2-0 loss to Liverpool in Madrid.

Ramsey gamble paying off at Juventus Milan (AFP) – Welsh international Aaron Ramsey scored on his first start for Juventus as the former Arsenal man’s Turin gamble looks to be paying off as he flourishes in the Italian league. Ramsey moved to the Serie A champions this season on a lucrative free transfer reported to be worth 503,000 euros per week ($515,000). The 28-year-old has impressed in his first three league games for the eight-time reigning Serie A champions having recovered from a hamstring injury picked up with Arsenal. He found the net on his debut against Verona on September 21, and impressed in the following two league wins over Brescia and SPAL. “Three wins out of three in Serie A this week. Onto the Champions League Tuesday,” Ramsey wrote on social media. Juventus will host Bayer Leverkusen in their Group D clash in Turin, having being held 2-2 at Atletico Madrid in their opener. Ramsey had come on as a late substitute against Atletico with the Italians conceding a goal just two minutes later. “I’ve waited a long time for this moment, I’m really happy, both for the victory and for the goal,” said Ramsey of scoring.  “It was important after the Madrid game.” Juventus are second in Serie A — two points behind Inter Milan — with their only slip-up a goalless draw with Fiorentina. After a bout of pneumonia, new coach Maurizio Sarri has been implementing his changes from predecessor Massimiliano Allegri. And Sarri has been giving more space to the Welshman, who the former Chelsea boss has been easing into the team. Ramsey has played an average of just over an hour in each of his league games so far. “We’re trying to preserve him from the point of view of playing time,” explained Sarri. “There’s a big difference between playing 60 and 90 minutes.” – John Charles’s Welsh successor – How Ramsey could fit into Sarri’s already talent-packed side needed to be worked out. The star-studded midfield boasts World Cup winner Blaise Matuidi, experienced interntionals Sami Khedira, Miralem Pjanic, Emre Can and Rodrigo Bentacur, as well as Adrien Rabiot who arrived from Paris Saint-Germain during the summer. But winger Douglas Costa’s injury has allowed Sarri to make more use of Ramsey with the Welsh playmaker’s driving runs forward impressing. Ramsey’s creative position behind strikers Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain or Paulo Dybala now seems to be confirmed, until at least Costa’s return from injury.

Neuer out to settle Germany’s keeper debate against Spurs London (AFP) – Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer heads into Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Tottenham Hotspur aiming for a display that settles the debate about whether he should remain Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper ahead of Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen. The showdown in London will be key in deciding who will win Group B, with Bayern currently top after beating Red Star Belgrade 3-0 in their opener a fortnight ago and Spurs needing a home victory to get back on track after throwing away a two-goal lead in a 2-2 draw at Olympiakos. Neuer will want to use the high-profile clash to prove his form after a shaky display on Saturday, in which he was twice beaten — including once from long-range effort — at bottom club Paderborn. Neuer could do little about the first goal, but was at fault when Paderborn defender Jamilu Collins scored from 30 metres out to make it 3-2 and give Bayern a nervy final 10 minutes before they eventually won and topped the Bundesliga for the first time this season. The captain insisted the result and his performance has “little bearing” on the Spurs game, but the shaky manner of the win detracted from the Bavarians taking first place. “We should have decided the game earlier for ourselves,” Neuer fumed as Bayern squandered chances before Robert Lewandowski scored what proved to be the winner with his 10th goal in six league games. That display came on the same day Ter Stegen launched Barca to a 2-0 win at Getafe with a sensational long-range pass for Luis Suarez’s opener after snuffing out an attack from the home side. Ter Stegen had sparked a war of words between Germany’s top goalkeepers when he said it was a “tough blow” to remain on the bench after watching Neuer beaten four times in a heavy home defeat by the Netherlands in this month’s Euro 2020 qualifier. The Barca keeper had been promised more games in 2019 by national coach Joachim Loew, but he has so far only had a 45-minute cameo against Serbia in March, and Neuer telling the 27-year-old his comments were unhelfpful to team spirit only led to a terse reply of “Manu doesn’t need to comment on my feelings”. While Loew has refused to be drawn on the row, Bayern’s out-spoken president Uli Hoeness waded in by insisting the Bundesliga champions would refuse to let their stars play for Germany should Neuer be dropped, before eventually rolling back from the threat.

Defence is king as Madrid go back to basics ahead of Brugge test Madrid (AFP) – Real Madrid’s revolution was supposed to be built around their attack but resilience has been the base for the recovery ahead of their Champions League group game at home to Club Brugge on Tuesday. At the end of last season, as Zinedine Zidane’s dreary run-in came to a close and paved the way for what many expected to be a spectacular summer, polls were published by Madrid’s newspapers asking fans which of the world’s deadliest strikers they hoped would arrive at the Santiago Bernabeu.  Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah, Sergio Aguero, Mauro Icardi and Robert Lewandowski were some of the names offered up and, in the end, Luka Jovic arrived, the Serbian who has struggled for starts so far and is yet to score a goal.  Eden Hazard is tasked too with helping fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo, even if the Belgian’s own opening in Madrid has also been underwhelming, stalled by injury and now seemingly a period of adjustment.  “We would like him to score because it will release him,” said Zidane on Saturday. “But there is no problem with him.”  Yet the stalemate against Atletico Madrid, in which neither side ever looked likely to find a winner, was a a stark indication of how Real Madrid have relied on their defence to ease the pressure on their coach. “We have been compact and again we have not conceded,” said Zidane after the derby draw. “We have missed a little offensively but we are in it and we can improve.” This is the first time Madrid have kept three consecutive clean sheets in the league under Zidane and in the games against Sevilla, Osasuna and Atletico, they have had to cope with just a single shot on target.  “Defending is very important, it is the fundamentals,” Zidane said.  The turnaround has been remarkable from Paris Saint-Germain, whose 3-0 win in the Champions League 10 days ago was Zidane’s worst ever defeat as coach, as well as Levante and Villarreal, who had just scored twice against Madrid in the league.  When they were floundering last season, the focus was on their lack of goals but Madrid’s defending was arguably just as problematic, with Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane and Marcelo all woefully out of sorts.  After missing the loss to PSG, Ramos’ return has coincided with the trio of clean sheets and his performances have been tighter too, more disciplined and less prone to extravagance.
