Haaland back in action as Bundesliga returns from mini-break Berlin (AFP) – Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Braut Haaland is expected to make an eagerly awaited return from injury as his side look to battle back into the Bundesliga top four with a win over high-fliers Wolfsburg on Sunday.  The prolific Norwegian prodigy has missed the last four league games and the last seven in all competitions after picking up a hamstring injury in early December.  Yet the 20-year-old returned to team training this week, and Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc confirmed that he would be back in action this weekend. “Erling’s recovery has gone well. We are working on the assumption that he can play against Wolfsburg,” said Zorc. Haaland’s return is timely, with his side in desperate need of a win after a miserable run of form before Christmas saw them drop to fifth in the table, eight points behind leaders Bayern Munich and two behind Sunday’s opponents Wolfsburg. Dortmund sacked coach Lucien Favre after they were thrashed by promoted side Stuttgart in mid-December, before suffering a shock away defeat to minnows Union Berlin in their second game under caretaker boss Edin Terzic.  Defeat to Wolfsburg would see Dortmund lose four home league games in a row for the first time in 20 years. “The most important thing is that we start well and end well,” said Haaland, who has scored 17 goals in 14 games in all competitions this season. In a season squashed by the coronavirus pandemic, many Bundesliga clubs have had just a week off in the shortest winter break in the league’s history.  Yet after their pre-Christmas cup tie was postponed until January, champions Bayern have had an extra week to recover and are expected to waltz past struggling Mainz on Sunday and defend their two-point lead at the top of the table.  Second from bottom and without a win in six games, Mainz parted ways with both their coach and sporting director over Christmas. Huddersfield boss Jan Siewert will take the reins as interim coach against Bayern.  There has also been a changing of the guard at bottom club Schalke, where new coach Christian Gross will take charge of his first game away to Hertha Berlin on Saturday. Former Tottenham and Stuttgart coach Gross has been charged with leading Schalke out of danger and ending their miserable winless streak of 29 games. Having not won since last January, the seven-time German champions are now just two games away from equalling Tasmania Berlin’s unwanted record of 31 games without a win, set back in 1966.  One to watch: Manuel Neuer Fresh from his coronation as the world’s best goalkeeper, the Bayern stopper is just one game away from equalling Oliver Kahn’s club record of 196 Bundesliga clean sheets, a milestone he has been chasing in vain for more than two months.  If he fails again to reach Kahn’s mark against Mainz, Neuer will have gone nine league games without a clean sheet for only the second time in his Bayern career.  Key stats 150 – RB Leipzig will celebrate their 150th Bundesliga game when they take on Stuttgart on Saturday. They have won 80 of them so far, more than any other German club at the same milestone.  50 – Weeks since Schalke’s last Bundesliga win in January last year. The league’s bottom club are just two games away from equalling Tasmania Berlin’s unwanted record of 31 games without a win.  10 – Goals Erling Braut Haaland has scored in his eight league games for Borussia Dortmund this season. The Norwegian is set to make his first appearance in a month against Wolfsburg.  Fixtures (all times 1430 GMT unless stated) Saturday Werder Bremen v Union Berlin, Arminia Bielefeld v Borussia Moenchengladbach, Cologne v Augsburg, Eintracht Frankfurt v Bayer Leverkusen, Hoffenheim v Freiburg, Hertha Berlin v Schalke (1730), Stuttgart v RB Leipzig (1930) Sunday Borussia Dortmund v Wolfsburg, Bayern Munich v Mainz (1700)

Man Utd eye Premier League summit after Liverpool stumble London (AFP) – Liverpool will start 2021 in a familiar position at the top of the Premier League but with a rejuvenated Manchester United leading a pack of challengers who are all within striking distance. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side would join the champions on 33 points if they beat Aston Villa on Friday, with Jurgen Klopp’s men not in action until Monday. But just seven points separate Liverpool from their next opponents Southampton, all the way down in ninth spot, giving clubs a chance to dream. AFP Sport looks at some of the main talking points ahead of the weekend action in the English top-flight. Liverpool v United battle? Jurgen Klopp said he was not “overly frustrated” after seeing his side held to a goalless draw at Newcastle on Wednesday. But the squandered points denied Liverpool the comfort of a five-point lead over bitter rivals United heading into the New Year. The leaders have now drawn three of their past five Premier League games, including last weekend’s disappointing 1-1 draw against struggling West Brom. Midfielder James Milner has noticed Manchester United’s rise and has warned injury-hit Liverpool that they must “kick on” or risk losing their crown.  Liverpool and United are the two most successful clubs in English football history but have rarely been at their best at the same time. It would take a brave punter to back against Liverpool, and Manchester City are tipped by the bookies as more likely winners than their neighbours. But despite lingering questions over United’s defence, there is a sense of momentum at Old Trafford and a growing belief that they could mount a proper title challenge for the first time since Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. Chelsea face Man City test    The most eye-catching game of the weekend pits Frank Lampard’s Chelsea against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Sunday — coronavirus permitting. New-look Chelsea appeared to have found a good balance after an early defeat to Liverpool, embarking on a long unbeaten run, but have lost their way in recent weeks, taking just four points from their past five matches. They now find themselves level on 26 points with City, who also have two games in hand after quietly putting together an impressive string of results following a slow start to the campaign. Despite the cluster of teams within striking range of the Premier League summit, neither manager will want to risk falling further behind Liverpool, who have the capability to go on a long unbeaten run. The reason Guardiola’s team have an extra game in hand is because their match against Everton this week was postponed over a Covid-19 outbreak at City. First-team training has resumed and the club said a fresh round of testing had not revealed any new positive cases. Following the update from City, the Premier League issued a statement confirming the game at Chelsea on Sunday currently remains on. Frustrated Mourinho Just a few short weeks ago Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham were top of the Premier League and looking every inch credible challengers. Now they are seven points off the pace after two draws and two defeats in their past four matches — and had to face the further frustration this week of a coronavirus-enforced postponement. Mourinho said his side should be doing more to kill games after conceding late in a disappointing 1-1 draw at Wolves. His mood was not helped by the postponement of Spurs’ home match against Fulham on Wednesday with three hours’ notice after a coronavirus outbreak in the visitors’ camp. Tottenham host free-scoring Leeds on Sunday in a mouthwatering clash, with Marcelo Bielsa’s men just three points behind Spurs after bouncing back from their 6-2 Old Trafford humbling with two wins. Fixtures Friday (GMT) Everton v West Ham (1730), Manchester United v Aston Villa (2000) Saturday Tottenham v Leeds (1230), Crystal Palace v Sheffield United (1500), Brighton v Wolves (1730), West Brom v Arsenal (2000) Sunday Burnley v Fulham (1200), Newcastle v Leicester (1415), Chelsea v Manchester City (1630) Monday  Southampton v Liverpool (2000)

Sociedad edge low-quality Basque derby Madrid (AFP) – Cristian Portu scored the only goal as Real Sociedad edged Athletic Bilbao 1-0 in a disappointing Basque derby on Thursday. Portu found the net after just five minutes at San Mames, finishing off a counter-attack by Mikel Oyarzabal.  Sociedad remain in third place in La Liga with 29 points, four behind Real Madrid who have a game in hand. Atletico Madrid still lead the way at the end of 2020 on 35 points, two ahead of their city rivals. Victory for Sociedad was also a boost with the two sides possibly facing each other in the Spanish Super Cup final in January. They will also meet in the delayed 2019/2020 Copa del Rey final in April.  “We were very clear about how we had to play and how we could harm them, they did not have any clear chances and we were able to kill the game,” said Portu.  “By results I would say that it has been a very good year, but we have a bittersweet taste for all the fans who have not been able to enjoy our victories in 2020.”

Arsenal’s Kolasinac joins Schalke on loan London (AFP) – Sead Kolasinac has agreed to join Bundesliga side Schalke on loan for the rest of the season, Arsenal announced on Thursday. The Bosnia defender, 27, will head back to the club where he joined the youth set-up and went on to become a first-team regular before moving to the Premier League in June 2017. Kolasinac’s loan move is set to begin on January 4. The full-back has made 113 appearances for Arsenal. Arsenal technical director Edu told the club website: “Sead needs to be playing regularly, so we have decided together that a move back to Germany with Schalke will benefit him at this moment. “We will be keeping in close contact with Sead, and wish him huge success for the remainder of the season with Schalke.” Schalke are currently bottom of the Bundesliga with just four points and without a win all season.

‘Hope not to repeat mistakes’: 10 years after World Cup fiasco, Domenech back in dugout Nantes (France) (AFP) – Raymond Domenech was unveiled as the new boss of struggling French Ligue 1 side Nantes on Thursday, 10 years after his rollercoaster reign as France coach ended in a player strike and World Cup humiliation. “I’m happy, it’s a real pleasure….maybe I understand your problems better, I hope not to repeat my mistakes”, he told journalists. The 68-year-old Domenech was in charge of Les Bleus from 2004 until the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The tournament was an utter fiasco with temperamental striker Nicolas Anelka sent home, players striking in response before the team was knocked out in the first round. That was the last time Domenech coached a team. If that was an excruciating experience for the combative Domenech, the next six months will be just as testing with Nantes down in 16th place in the table, three points above the relegation trapdoor. “The objective is to bring pleasure, to offer something coherent to this team,” said Domenech who has not coached at top-flight club level since a five-year spell at Lyon from 1988-1993. “Through what we are going to show on the field, I hope that we will bring everyone together. “I’m not worried, I want things to go well on the pitch, we are moving forward, we are training, the players are strong in spirit, they are happy, with a lot of joy and desire.” The club’s fans, however, may need convincing. When he arrived for training on Wednesday, he was greeted by a band playing circus music with a ‘ringmaster’ taking aim at him and club owner Waldemar Kita. Players were compared to goats. “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Kita Circus! The Kita Circus brings you some new amazing new acts,” boomed a member of the ‘Brigade Loire’ supporters’ club to a background of deafening music. “Raymond Domenech will explain to us his vision of football, what will make us laugh on the upcoming weekends.” Domenech insisted Thursday that he was unperturbed by the hostility. “At all clubs there are problems. There are worries everywhere. If everything was rosy, you’d have nothing more to write,” he told reporters. “I don’t know anyone at this club who does not want it to work, everyone wants it to work.”  Domenech’s first match in charge will be on January 6 at home against Breton rivals Rennes.

Cavani banned over ‘negrito’ social media post London (AFP) – Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani has been banned for three matches and fined £100,000 for using a racial term in a social media post, the Football Association announced on Thursday. The 33-year-old summer signing produced a match-winning display at Southampton on November 29, providing an assist for Bruno Fernandes before netting a two goals in a 3-2 comeback win. Cavani posted a social media message on Instagram shortly after the match, replying to a message of congratulations using the Spanish term “negrito” (small black person). The Uruguayan swiftly deleted the post and issued an apology after being made aware of the connotations, with the player releasing an apologetic statement saying he was “completely opposed to racism”. But the FA has now punished the striker after he admitted breaching FA Rule E3. “A comment posted on the Manchester United FC striker’s Instagram page was insulting, abusive, improper and brought the game into disrepute,” the FA said in a statement. “The post also constitutes an ‘aggravated breach’… as it included reference, whether express or implied, to colour and/or race and/or ethnic origin,” the statement added. Manchester United issued a statement saying Cavani was not aware his words could have been misconstrued and “sincerely apologised” for the post and to anyone who was offended.  “Despite his honest belief that he was simply sending an affectionate thank you in response to a congratulatory message from a close friend, he chose not to contest the charge out of respect for, and solidarity with, the FA and the fight against racism in football,” the club said. United said they hoped the independent regulatory commission appointed to decide the sanction would make it clear in its written reasons that the former Paris Saint-Germain player “is not a racist, nor was there any racist intent in relation to his post”.

Man Utd players cannot ‘fake’ their way into team, says Solskjaer London (AFP) – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says players cannot “fake” their way into the Manchester United team, pointing to fierce competition for places and a stronger mentality as factors in their rise. The Old Trafford giants will kick off against Aston Villa on Friday second in the Premier League, just three points behind leaders Liverpool and with a game in hand. Solskjaer has so far been coy on talk about a push for a first Premier League crown since 2013 but was more forthcoming when it came to the advances made in his two years in the dugout. The United boss said the players had grown mentally stronger since he had arrived in 2018. “One, they’re two years older than when I came,” he said on Thursday. “Two, some of them are really strong personalities that we’ve brought in and they have really been a good influence. “I think we have competition for places, which means you cannot go around and think that you can just fake your way through being part of this team because you only deserve to be in a team that you contribute to.” Solskjaer said his players had realised it was a privilege to play for the 20-time English champions. “When you’re here, enjoy it as much as you can and maybe you’ll experience some fantastic times,” he said. “We’ve got winners like Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic, who don’t really play every single game but are so influential in the group, in the build-up to games and even during games when they’re not playing.” Solskjaer made six changes for the last-gasp 1-0 win against Wolves on Tuesday, when Luke Shaw, Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay came off a bench that included Mata, Fred and Donny van de Beek. “We have a strong squad,” the Norwegian said.  “We’ve rotated a lot and we have not really found a settled XI this season but I don’t think it’s about that anyway this season. “It’s going to be about a squad of 25 to 26 players and I think, towards the end of the season, that will help us.” Solskjaer knows about being left out from his time as a player at Old Trafford, when he was often used as a substitute by Alex Ferguson. The Norwegian scored four goals against Everton in 1999 only to then be benched in their next league game. “It’s horses for courses,” Solskjaer said. “Some players you feel are more suitable for some teams but, of course, you do plan ahead. “I remember those four goals. I remember also the times that you feel you deserve to play and you’re left out. That’s part of being at Manchester United. “We have top players everywhere and we know that, throughout the season, if you’re going to win something you have to contribute.”

Belgian midfielder Nainggolan rejoins Cagliari on loan from Inter Rome (AFP) – Belgian midfielder Radja Nainggolan has rejoined Cagliari, where he played between 2010-14, on a second loan from Inter Milan, the Sardinian club announced Thursday. Nainggolan, who spent last season at Cagliari on loan, this time is on loan until the end of the season. Cagliari said that the club and player shared “a very strong bond”. “So strong that when on a hot afternoon at the end of August, the Belgian, Sardinian by adoption, emptied his locker in Asseminello, everyone hoped that it would not be a farewell.”

Wolves boss Nuno charged over ref comments London (AFP) – Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo has been charged with improper conduct by the Football Association over comments he made about referee Lee Mason. The Portuguese was highly critical of the official after his side’s Premier League match against Burnley on December 21. The FA said in a statement: “Nuno Espirito Santo has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to their Premier League match against Burnley FC on Monday December 21, 2020. “It is alleged that comments made by the head coach during a post-match interview constitute improper conduct as they were personally offensive to the match official and/or bring the game into disrepute.” Nuno has until January 5 to respond to the charge, the FA said. The Wolves boss took aim at Mason after the Burnley match, which ended in a 2-1 defeat for his side. “The referee does not have the quality to whistle a game in the Premier League,” he said.  He added: “I just don’t want to see him more — that’s what I told him. I hope he doesn’t whistle a game of ours again because all the games we have with Lee Mason are always the same. “He cannot control the players, the players are constantly arguing — both teams. With all the other referees the game flows, there’s dialogue. He’s just not ready to do it.” Nuno has said he would only apologise for the timing of his comments not for his “words and thoughts”. “I never ever will judge or question the integrity of a referee,” he said. “I never did it and I will never do it in my life. “What I said is about the ability of the referee, what I felt and what I saw in the match and previous matches.” Post-match comments about a referee’s performance are permitted under FA regulations provided they do not imply bias, attack an official’s integrity, are not personally offensive, prolonged or particularly unreasonable.

Burnley’s new US owners pledge to back manager Dyche London (AFP) – Burnley’s new US owners said Thursday they are “fully prepared” to back manager Sean Dyche after completing their takeover of the Premier League club. US investment group ALK Capital has acquired a controlling 84 percent stake in Burnley after the deal was approved and ratified by the Premier League. Alan Pace, who succeeds Mike Garlick as chairman, revealed ALK were “very, very big fans” of Dyche and stood ready to give the green light to fresh investment in the squad during the January transfer window. Dyche, who has been in charge at Turf Moor since 2012, has overseen two promotions to the English top-flight for Burnley, who are in their fifth consecutive season in the Premier League. “The longevity and the stability of the management side has been something that has been very impactful from our prospective,” said Pace, a former president of Major League Soccer’s Real Salt Lake. The new chairman, 53, said in an interview with Burnley club media: “We are very prepared to come in and support Sean and the management team. “We need time to get in and understand what their needs are, what they have been planning for, what the decisions were which they have taken so far and where they are desiring to go to — but we are fully prepared to back the manager.” Garlick, who had held just under 50 percent of the club’s shares, will remain on ALK Capital’s new board of directors at Burnley. He said the deal represented a “natural progression” for the club. Pace, a dual British-American national, is set to take an “active role” in the club, will be moving to the area and aims to improve Burnley’s global standing. “What attracted us specifically to Burnley had a lot to do with the passion of the fans, the quality of the club and the way that it had been managed, the longevity of the coaching staff and the ability for us to see a path to growth,” he said. – Long-term focus – “For us, we would not do anything that is not on a long-term basis — this is not a short ‘buy-to-flip’ opportunity. This is very much something we have a passion for ourselves.” Dyche guided Burnley to 1-0 home win over bottom club Sheffield United on Tuesday, which leaves them 16th in the table, five points clear of the relegation zone. Commenting on the possibility of adding to his injury-reduced squad, and speaking before confirmation of ALK’s completed takeover, Dyche had been cautious. “If there are things in the market we think we can align, we will. If there’s not, we’ll keep operating with the group we’ve got,” the Burnley manager said “If you’ve got money available to spend you can only spend it on the players that are available. “If they are the right players, you do it. If they’re not the right players I’ve never seen the point of it… just stay with what you’ve got.”

Milner says Liverpool must ‘kick on’ as Man Utd threaten London (AFP) – James Milner says Liverpool have to “kick on” in 2021 after two disappointing draws left Manchester United breathing down their necks at the top of the Premier League. Jurgen Klopp’s defending champions head into the New Year with a three-point lead despite dropped points against strugglers West Brom and Newcastle. Arch-rivals United, who have dropped just four points since November 1, would go level on points with the leaders if they beat Aston Villa on Friday. Liverpool, who have played a game more than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men, are next in action on Monday, away at Southampton. “I think it’s a positive (Liverpool are top) but it seems to be at this moment in time that nobody wants to take it by the scruff of the neck,” Milner told Liverpoolfc.com. “We’ve dropped points, everyone seems to be dropping points. United have had a good run and they’re probably the only team who are putting a run together. “It’s important that we need to kick on now and try to get a few three-pointers.” Liverpool have already dropped as many points in 16 matches this season as they did in the whole of the previous campaign, when they became English champions for the first time in 30 years. Last season, Klopp’s side did not lose a league match until February 29, having won all of their games except one — against United — up until that point. The unique circumstances of the 2020/21 campaign, with its lack of a proper pre-season and a compressed schedule as a result of coronavirus, meant a repeat of Liverpool’s runaway success was never likely. But Milner accepts they could still have done better despite their defensive injury crisis. “There’s points we’ve dropped this season where we feel we could have done better but to still be in the mix going into the New Year is good, especially with the problems we have,” he said. “But we are a quality squad of players who have been together a long time and we are used to winning. “We are disappointed not to get the three points (at Newcastle) but we want to get back on the winning track as soon as possible.”

Arteta says ‘priority’ in transfer window is to trim bloated Arsenal squad London (AFP) – Mikel Arteta says Arsenal’s priority in the January transfer window is to trim their bloated squad as he seeks to build on a mini-revival at the Premier League club. The Gunners were able to offload Emiliano Martinez and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the summer window while Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira departed on loan. But forgotten man Mesut Ozil remained at the Emirates along with Shkodran Mustafi and Sead Kolasinac, who have barely featured in the Premier League this season. Arsenal have been linked with a loan move for Real Madrid playmaker Isco next month, but first of all technical director Edu will attempt to raise funds by moving on those who are surplus to requirements. “There are some players that are going to go on loan and going to leave and that is the priority at the moment,” Arteta said ahead of Saturday’s trip to West Brom. “We cannot sustain the numbers that we have in certain positions and we are looking to do that, and then we will see if we have the right opportunity in the positions where we need some more help.” The pressure on Arteta has eased after wins against Chelsea and Brighton lifted Arsenal to 13th in the Premier League table following a miserable run. Bukayo Saka, who starred in the 1-0 win at Brighton on Tuesday, is expected to be fit for the match against Sam Allardyce’s West Brom. The teenager was forced off during the latter stages of the victory after a strong challenge, but should recover while David Luiz and Willian, who both tested negative for Covid-19 earlier this week, may return this weekend after a bout of illness. Allardyce this week called for a “circuit-breaker” in the Premier League as coronavirus cases spike in Britain but league bosses said the competition would continue as planned. “I think we have shown the system is working,” said Arteta. “In the last week or so something has happened and we will have more restrictions and more tests to try to be as efficient as we were before and we will see, but I think it can work and we can carry on.”

London (AFP) – Mikel Arteta says Arsenal’s priority in the January transfer window is to trim their bloated squad as he seeks to build on a mini-revival at the Premier League club. The Gunners were able to offload Emiliano Martinez and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the summer window while Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira departed on loan. US investors complete takeover of Premier League side Burnley London (AFP) – US investment group ALK Capital has completed its takeover of Burnley, acquiring a controlling 84 percent stake in the Premier League club, it was announced on Thursday. Delaware-based ALK, which specialises in investments in the sport and media sectors, said its managing partner Alan Pace would take over from Mike Garlick as chairman. Pace, the former president of Major League Soccer’s Real Salt Lake, said the move marked “the start of an exciting journey for the entire Clarets family”. “With a rich heritage, a brilliant academy, and a passionate fan base, this club has solid foundations to build upon,” he said in a statement on the club’s website. Garlick, who had held just under 50 percent of the club’s shares, will remain on ALK Capital’s new board of directors at Burnley. He said the deal represented a “natural progression” for the club, who are in their fifth consecutive season in the English top-flight. “In Alan Pace and his team, we are welcoming committed investors to Turf Moor who will be living here in the local community and investing in the club, both on and off the football pitch, for many years to come,” he said. One of ALK’s first priorities is likely to be a meeting with Dyche, who can expect fresh financial support in the January transfer window. The manager said after Tuesday’s victory over Sheffield United that he had no knowledge of the deal, but it is understood moves were already under way by the new ownership to bring him up to speed on their plans. One result of the change in ownership could be an expansion of the club’s international scouting and transfer network. Commenting on Tuesday on the likelihood of adding to his injury-reduced squad in the coming weeks, Dyche offered a cautious take. “If there are things in the market we think we can align, we will. If there’s not, we’ll keep operating with the group we’ve got,” said the manager, who has been in charge at Turf Moor since 2012. Burnley are 16th in the Premier League, five points above the relegation zone, and host 18th-placed Fulham on Sunday.

Africa roundup: S. African club hire coach they fired three times Johannesburg (AFP) – South African Premiership strugglers Chippa United have hired coach Dan Malesela for a fourth stint at the Port Elizabeth club, who sacked him three times. Former sports minister Fikile Mbalula reacted to the announcement by telling Chippa they must stop “abusing” Malesela and treating him “like a dog”. Chippa owner and millionaire Siviwe Mpengesi has made 28 coaching appointments since the perennial relegation candidates were promoted to the top flight eight years ago. Here, AFP Sport rounds up African football news: South Africa Chippa dumped former Lesotho star Lehlohonolo Seema after one win in eight league matches and hoped to replace him with Belgian Luc Eymael, who previously had successful stints with two South African clubs.  But the South African Football Association and the regional government in the eastern Cape, where Chippa are based, objected to hiring Eymael because of remarks the coach allegedly made in Tanzania this year. Young Africans sacked the Belgian after accusing him of calling supporters of the Dar es Salaam club “monkeys and dogs who know nothing about football”, an allegation Eymael denies. Ivory Coast FIFA will appoint a normalisation committee to govern Ivorian football until the end of 2021 after expressing dissatisfaction with the running of the sport in the west African nation. A statement from the world body said the decision stemmed from the failure to “carry out an electoral process for a new executive committee” in line with FIFA requirements. Former Ivory Coast and Chelsea star Didier Drogba, 42, was among candidates bidding for the presidency of the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF). Egypt Talaat Youssef has walked out on Egyptian Premier League club and former African champions Ismaily after just 48 hours in charge of the underachieving side. He reportedly quit after a row with a club official during a training session, although an Ismaily statement said he left for “family reasons”.  Youssef had replaced Brazilian Heron Ricardo Ferreira, who was sacked after Ismaily garnered only two points from three matches at the start of the new league campaign. Cameroon Cameroon coach Martin Ndtoungue Mpile has included experienced forwards Yannick Ndjeng and Jacques Zoua from lower league club AS Futuro in his preliminary African Nations Championship (CHAN) squad. Zoua, 29, played in France, Switzerland and Germany before returning to central Africa while Ndjeng, 30, spent time with Tunisian and African giants Esperance. Cameroon are hosting the 16-team Nations Championship, which is reserved for footballers playing in their country of birth, and face Zimbabwe in the January 16 tournament opener. Angola The South African Football Association (Safa) has intervened to help Kaizer Chiefs fulfil a CAF Champions League last 32 second leg against Primeiro Agosto in Angola on January 5. Safa arranged for the Soweto club to travel to Luanda in a chartered aircraft after Angola barred commercial flights from South Africa this week in a coronavirus-related move. Primeiro, who were semi-finalists in 2018, are slight favourites to win the tie and qualify for the group stage after forcing a 0-0 first leg draw in South Africa last week. Nigeria The new Nigerian Professional Football League season has kicked off after nine months of inactivity because of Covid-19. Defending champions Plateau United, who were declared champions of the shortened previous campaign on an average-points-per-game system, crashed 2-0 at home to Kwara United.  Enyimba, runners-up behind Plateau and the only Nigerian club to win the CAF Champions League, began with a 1-0 win over visiting Abia Warriors. Zimbabwe Zimbabwe preparations for the Nations Championship have suffered a major setback with nine of the squad testing positive for coronavirus. Croatian coach Zdravko Logarusic has temporarily suspended training after players and support staff were tested when they returned to a camp in Harare having spent Christmas at their homes.   Zimbabwe tackle hosts Cameroon in Yaounde on January 16 in the tournament opener and will also play Burkina Faso and Mali in Group A with the teams finishing first and second advancing to the quarter-finals.

Japan’s Honda ‘so sorry’ for lacklustre Botafogo spell Tokyo (AFP) – Former Japan midfielder Keisuke Honda apologised for a disappointing spell at Brazil’s Botafogo as he bowed out ahead of a reported move to Europe. Honda, 34, said he accepted fans’ criticism after scoring only three goals in 27 matches during a coronavirus-disrupted year. “Criticism is natural and I am not making excuses, I am disappointed as well, I am so sorry,” he tweeted in Portuguese. Reports in Portugal have said that Honda, a former AC Milan and CSKA Moscow player and a one-time mainstay of Japan’s national team, will join Portuguese outfit Portimonense in January. Honda was welcomed by thousands of fans when he arrived in Brazil on February 7. But Botafogo have struggled this season and they are currently second from bottom in the Serie A table. Honda is among the most successful Japanese footballers. He scored 37 goals, including four at World Cups, in 98 appearances for the national team.

Reyna leads charge of Bundesliga’s rising teen stars Berlin (AFP) – The Bundesliga returns this weekend after a two-week break with Borussia Dortmund’s American midfielder Giovanni Reyna leading a crop of talented teenagers rapidly becoming household names. Reyna, who marked his 18th birthday in November by extending his contract until 2025, scored his first Bundesliga goal on the opening day of this season. He has featured in all of Dortmund’s Bundesliga and Champions League games in 2020/21, scoring three league goals – including the equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Frankfurt – and producing six assists. Reyna, an attacking midfielder who can play on either wing, needs a strong performance at home to Wolfsburg on Sunday after Dortmund’s shock 2-1 defeat to Union Berlin a fortnight ago. The result left Dortmund fifth in the league, eight points behind leaders Bayern Munich, who host Mainz on Sunday.  Against Wolfsburg, Dortmund could welcome back striker Erling Braut Haaland, who scored ten Bundesliga goals in eight games before being sidelined by a hip injury. Having forced his way into the Dortmund first-team, Reyna now wants to emulate Haaland and England winger Jadon Sancho, both 20, by deciding games. “You see guys like Sancho and Haaland – I want to be at their level,” Reyna told The Players’ Tribune. “I know I can make that jump this season. I’ve come out of my shell. I now demand the ball.” The son of former USA captain Claudio Reyna, he joined Dortmund from New York City FC in July 2019. Shortly after his 17th birthday last January, Reyna made his Dortmund debut, then bagged his first senior goal in February with a jaw-dropping strike in a German Cup game at Bremen. He marked his Champions League debut the same month with a brilliant pass to set up Haaland for the winning goal in the last 16, first-leg victory over Paris Saint Germain.  However, Reyna’s raw talent needs polishing. His defensive work was exposed when Union’s Liverpool loanee Taiwo Awoniyi got in front of him to head home. Dortmund fielded a youthful side in Berlin where Haaland’s understudy Youssoufa Moukoko became the league’s youngest goal-scorer at 16 years, 28 days. Down in Bavaria, European champions Bayern Munich are also giving youth a chance. – Musiala impresses for Bayern – Before this season, double Champions League winners Thomas Mueller and David Alaba, who graduated from Bayern’s academy more than a decade ago, were the last first-team players to come up through the club’s youth structure. That has all changed with 17-year-olds Jamal Musiala and Bright Arrey-Mbi, plus Angelo Stiller, 19, given game time this season for the European champions by Hansi Flick. As Alphonso Davies proved last season in making the left-back berth his own as a then 19-year-old, Flick cares more about talent than age. “Finally, we once again have a few players on our (academy) campus who are breaking through,” said Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. Of Bayern’s trio of teens, Musiala has made the biggest impact. The attacking midfielder, who can also play on the left, became the club’s youngest goal-scorer during the 8-0 demolition of Schalke on the opening day of this season. Born in Stuttgart – his mother is German – Musiala moved to London as a child and rose through Chelsea’s academy before joining Bayern’s youth structure last year. Shortly after earning his first England Under-21 cap in November, Musiala then came off Bayern’s bench and scored with a superb strike in the 3-3 draw against RB Leipzig. “We’re very happy about Musiala’s development, he’s very calm on the ball and the football world can look forward to what will come of this young talent,” Flick said recently. Musiala also hit the post in Bayern’s 2-1 win at Bayer Leverkusen which put them top a week before Christmas. His obvious talent has drawn the attention of Germany team director Oliver Bierhoff, who hopes to persuade Musiala to play for the country of his birth rather than England. “We’re watching him, because of his German FA past and his current performances,” Bierhoff recently said of Muisala, a rarity having played for Germany Under-16s as well as England’s juniors.

Atletico extend La Liga lead after Real slip at Elche Madrid (AFP) – Atletico Madrid extended their lead at the top of La Liga on Wednesday after Luis Suarez fired them to a 1-0 win over Getafe while Real Madrid could only draw 1-1 at Elche. Suarez struck in the 20th minute with a superb header from Yannick Carrasco’s cross to move Diego Simeone’s Atletico up to 35 points, two ahead of local rivals Madrid after they were pegged back by a Fidel Chaves penalty following Luka Modric’s early opener. Real Sociedad, Sevilla and Villarreal are all a further seven points back, with Barcelona 10 behind Atletico in sixth after their 1-1 draw with Eibar on Tuesday. Atletico have also played two fewer matches than reigning champions Madrid after a win emblematic of Simeone’s reign on his 500th match as coach of the club. “When I got on the plane to come here I thought that when I left the club (as a player) that I always wanted to come back,” said Simeone, who is in his 10th year as Atletico coach. “I found men (Koke, Saul Niguez) who wanted to get the club out of the bad patch it was in, and I have a relationship with them that goes beyond football.” Uruguay forward Suarez’s eighth goal of the season was a good as it got for Atletico, who despite fielding a full-strength line-up did not impress in a match of little incident at the Wanda Metropolitano. However Atletico’s third straight win keeps them top of the pile after a fraught last few days in which Diego Costa was allowed to leave and Kieran Trippier was banned until the end of February for betting breaches. – Madrid flop at Elche – Zinedine Zidane’s Madrid knew that whatever happened in the late fixture they would trail Atletico going into the new year, but they looked on course for a routine win at struggling Elche when Modric opened the scoring in the 20th minute. Croatian Modric pounced to place a perfect header in the top corner after Marco Asensio’s longe range shot thumped back out off the bar, the second time Madrid had hit the woodwork in the early minutes. The away side thought they had a penalty nine minutes before the break when referee Jorge Figueroa Vazquez pointed to the spot for what he thought was a Ivan Marcone handball, but the awarding was cancelled following a VAR check. Elche then got a spot-kick of their own five minutes into the second half when Daniel Carvajal was caught tearing at Antonio Barragan’s shirt, with Fidel stepping up to stroke home the leveller. Lucas Boye then hit the post for the hosts before home keeper Edgar Badia made two superb stops deny Carvajal and Sergio Ramos as Madrid pushed for a win that would have kept them level on points with their capital city rivals but never materialised. – Granada in Euro hunt – Earlier Granada moved to within two points of the Champions League places after beating Valencia 2-1 in a feisty match where three players were sent off in six second-half minutes. Jorge Molina’s powerful header two minutes from time keeps Granada in seventh place on 24 points, two behind fourth-placed Sevilla, Sociedad and Villarreal. Valencia’s seventh league defeat of the season leaves them level on 15 points with Real Valladolid, who are third-from-bottom in the relegation zone. Javi Gracia’s side haven’t won a La Liga match in their last seven attempts and had their task made harder when Jason and Goncalo Guedes were sent off within three minutes of each other midway through the second half. Granada’s Domingos Duarte was then shown a straight red card three minutes later after he cynically hacked down Manu Vallejo as he attempted to burst through on goal with the scores still level. Molina punished the beleaguered away side by thumping home Alberto Soro’s cross.

Liverpool miss chance to stretch lead after Newcastle stalemate Newcastle (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Liverpool squandered the chance to open up a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League in the final English top-flight match of 2020 after being held to a goalless draw by Newcastle on Wednesday. The 0-0 stalemate at St James’ Park means the champions go into the New Year with a three-point lead over Manchester United, having played a game more. But they will rue their missed chances in a match in which they enjoyed nearly three-quarters of possession. Mohamed Salah — top of the Premier League goalscoring charts with 13 goals — missed the target either side of half-time with just goalkeeper Karl Darlow to beat and strike-partner Roberto Firmino saw two headers superbly saved. Three days after lowly West Brom snatched a point at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp’s men, who have now won only two of their eight league away games this season, were frustrated once again, although it took a late goal-line clearance from Fabian Schar and Darlow’s brilliance to keep them at bay. Klopp rued his side’s profligacy in front of goal. “You might not think I have to tip my hat to my team but I like the performance,” he told the BBC. “It was really good. Can we play better football? Yes, but in this game we did more than enough to win it. “I think we had four 100 percent chances. We have won against Newcastle before with fewer chances. Tonight we didn’t but we accept that. I am happy with the things I saw tonight and I can really work with that. “The boys are frustrated and rightly so but not about the performance. It is a basis to build on for the next few days, weeks, months.” Newcastle, who came into the match without a win in four games in all competitions, started positively, with returning striker Callum Wilson almost catching goalkeeper Alisson Becker unaware with a speculative early shot. The Reds needed Alisson to be at his best to deny Wilson once again 10 minutes later after he had outpaced defender Nathaniel Phillips. – Liverpool wasteful – Liverpool should have been ahead 11 minutes before the break when Salah beat the offside trap to control the ball in front of the advancing Darlow, only to stab his shot wide of the post, and the keeper produced a fine reaction save in stoppage time to repel Firmino’s header from point-blank range. Mane headed into the side-netting from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s 49th-minute corner and when Liverpool turned the screw, with Mane going through his full repertoire of tricks, the Magpies’ rearguard came under increasing pressure. Salah had another chance to break the deadlock midway through the second half when he was played in by Firmino but, after steadying himself, directed his effort past the upright. Firmino was equally wasteful when presented with a glorious chance at the far post as Newcastle rode their luck. It nearly got much better for the Magpies 11 minutes from time when Ciaran Clark met Matt Ritchie’s free-kick with a downward header that Alisson had to turn away. But Schar hacked the ball off his own line ahead of Mane seconds later and Darlow brilliantly clawed away another Firmino header at the death to preserve his clean sheet. Klopp’s men finish the calendar year on 33 points from 16 games, three clear of United, who have 30 points after 15 matches. The two teams, with a combined 39 English titles between them, meet on January 17 at Anfield.

The 0-0 draw at St James’ Park means the champions go into the New Year with a three-point lead over Manchester United, having played a game more. Nathaniel Phillips was handed a Premier League start for Liverpool, with Jurgen Klopp’s defensive resources having been further depleted. With Joel Matip having joined long-term absentees Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez on the casualty list, Phillips was included along with former Magpies midfielder James Milner in two changes to the side that drew 1-1 with West Brom as Matip and Georginio Wijnaldum made way. Newcastle started brightly, with Callum Wilson forcing two saves from keeper Alisson Becker inside the opening 12 minutes and giving as good as they got for much of the half. However, Liverpool might have taken the lead 11 minutes before the break when Mohamed Salah stabbed wide having seemingly done the hard work. And it took a fine reaction save from Karl Darlow to deny Roberto Firmino in stoppage time and ensure the sides headed back to the dressing rooms with the scores still level. Liverpool, who enjoyed nearly three-quarters of possession during the match, continued to press in the second period but could not find a breakthrough, with Darlow coming to the home side’s rescue in the dying minutes. Klopp’s men finish 2020 on 33 points after 16 games, three clear of United, who have 30 points after 15 matches.

Premier League has ‘no plans’ to pause season as virus wreaks fresh havoc London (AFP) – The Premier League said on Wednesday it had “no plans” to pause the season and had confidence in its protocols after a third English top-flight match was postponed due to coronavirus outbreaks. Tottenham’s home match against Fulham was scrapped just three hours before the scheduled 1800 GMT kick-off after a number of Covid-19 cases at the visiting club. It is the third top-flight game to be wiped out by the virus, following Newcastle’s match with Aston Villa earlier this month and Monday’s game between Everton and Manchester City. The Premier League announced on Tuesday there had been a season-high 18 positive tests in its latest round of testing across the competition, already compressed due to the late start to the season. Britain is struggling with another surge in the virus, with an overall death toll of more than 72,500 — one of the worst in the world. But league chiefs issued a statement late Wednesday expressing their determination to fulfil their fixtures. “The Premier League has not discussed pausing the season and has no plans to do so,” it said. “The league continues to have confidence in its Covid-19 protocols to enable fixtures to be played as scheduled, and these protocols continue to have the full backing of government. “With the health of players and staff the priority, the league is also fully supportive of how clubs are implementing the protocols and rules.” Further down the English football pyramid, postponements are mounting, with seven of the 12 games scheduled for Tuesday in the third-tier League One called off due to coronavirus infections. After Manchester City’s trip to Everton on Monday was postponed due to a Covid outbreak in Pep Guardiola’s squad, all five matches scheduled for Tuesday went ahead. But Scott Parker’s Fulham asked for their game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to be called off, which the Premier League board sanctioned on Wednesday. – Mourinho frustration – It is understood Spurs are unhappy about the decision and the timing of it.  There had been speculation throughout the day that the game might be called off and manager Jose Mourinho indicated his frustration in an Instagram post shortly after 1400 GMT. Mourinho posted a video on his account of his staff waiting for news with a message which read: “We still don’t know if we play. Best league in the world.” The Premier League confirmed the decision to postpone the game was taken following a meeting on Wednesday. “Fulham lodged a request with the Premier League board to rearrange the fixture following a significant rise in positive Covid-19 cases, as well as a number of players showing symptoms today,” it said. Press reports said representatives of some Premier League clubs had discussed a two-week “cooling off” period next month, and West Brom boss Sam Allardyce backed the so-called “circuit-breaker”. But Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti said he had confidence in the rules in place. “I think the protocol the Premier League put in place is really good,” he said. “We feel safe in our bubble. But outside, I have to pay attention, like all the normal people have to pay attention.” League officials are desperate to avoid suspending the season with broadcast contracts to honour and the postponed European Championship looming in June. Manchester City were due to return to training on Wednesday after no new positive cases of coronavirus were reported following the latest round of testing. More tests will take place later in the week, the results of which will determine whether Sunday’s trip to Chelsea and next week’s League Cup semi-final at Manchester United can go ahead. Premier League leaders Liverpool were in action at Newcastle’s in Wednesday’s late match. Sports fans will be barred across England after the government placed almost the entire country under tougher restrictions. Until the rules were tightened, 10 clubs in the Premier League and English Football League, including Liverpool and Everton, had been able to admit supporters.

Suarez ensures Atletico top La Liga at end of 2020 Madrid (AFP) – Luis Suarez made sure that Atletico Madrid will end 2020 top of La Liga after scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win over Getafe on Wednesday. Suarez struck in the 20th minute with a superb header from Yannick Carrasco’s cross to take Diego Simeone’s side three points ahead of Real Madrid, who are in action at lowly Elche later on Wednesday. Real Sociedad, Sevilla and Villarreal are all a further six points back, with Barcelona 10 points behind Atletico in sixth after their 1-1 draw with Eibar on Tuesday. Even if Madrid win in the late kick-off they will stay behind Atletico thanks to their significantly inferior goal difference, which currently separates teams locked on the same points. Atletico will have also played two fewer matches than their local rivals come the end of the day’s fixtures after a win emblematic of Simeone’s reign on his 500th match as coach of the club. Thomas Lemar almost opened the scoring in the 15th minute when he crashed a shot off the near post from a tight angle. Suarez gave the hosts the lead with a beautifully placed header that was all the more impressive for the way Carrasco’s cross was flashed into a crowded area from midfield. The Uruguayan’s eighth goal of the season was a good as it got for Atletico, who despite a fielding a full-strength line-up did not impress in a match of little incident at the Wanda Metropolitano. They failed to take the game by the scruff of the neck against a Getafe team that have scored just 12 times in 15 matches and are 14th, two points above the relegation zone. However Atletico’s third win in a row ensures they remain top of the pile after a fraught last few days in which Diego Costa was allowed to leave and Kieran Trippier was banned until the end of February for betting breaches. – Granada in Euro hunt – Earlier Granada moved to within two points of the Champions League places after beating Valencia 2-1 in a fiesty match where three players were sent off in six second-half minutes. Jorge Molina’s powerful header two minutes from time keeps Granada in seventh place on 24 points, two behind fourth-placed Sevilla.  Granada, who levelled through Kenedy on the stroke of half-time after Kevin Gameiro had opened for Valencia in the 36th minute, are also one point away from Barcelona. Valencia’s seventh league defeat of the season leaves them level on 15 points with Real Valladolid, who are third-from-bottom in the relegation zone and earned a point at Cadiz on Tuesday.

Madrid (AFP) – Luis Suarez made sure that Atletico Madrid will end 2020 top of La Liga after scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win over Getafe on Wednesday. Premier League under pressure as virus wreaks fresh havoc London (AFP) – Premier League chiefs postponed a third English top-flight match due to coronavirus outbreaks on Wednesday but said they had full confidence in their protocols despite calls for a “circuit-breaker”. Further down the English football pyramid, postponements are mounting, with seven of the 12 games scheduled for Tuesday in the third-tier League One called off due to coronavirus infections. Britain is struggling with another surge in the virus, with an overall death toll of more than 72,500 — one of the worst in the world. “Fulham lodged a request with the Premier League board to rearrange the fixture following a significant rise in positive Covid-19 cases, as well as a number of players showing symptoms today,” it said in a statement. “The Premier League board has consulted its medical advisers and the decision to postpone the game has been taken as a precaution and with the health of players and staff as the priority. The group will now be re-tested immediately.” Press reports said representatives of some Premier League clubs had discussed a two-week “cooling off” period next month, and West Brom boss Sam Allardyce backed the so-called circuit breaker. But Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti said he had confidence in the rules in place. “I think the protocol the Premier League put in place is really good,” he said. “We feel safe in our bubble. But outside, I have to pay attention, like all the normal people have to pay attention.” Despite the rising number of cases across the English top-flight, the Premier League said it intended to continue matches, with no plans for a shutdown to mirror the three-month stoppage earlier this year. League officials are desperate to avoid suspending the season with broadcast contracts to honour and the postponed European Championship looming in June. “With low numbers of positive tests across the overwhelming majority of clubs, the Premier League continues to have full confidence in its Covid-19 protocols and being able to continue to play our fixtures as scheduled,” the Premier League statement said. Premier League leaders Liverpool are due to travel to Newcastle for Wednesday’s late match. Sports fans will be barred across England after the government placed almost the entire country under tougher restrictions. Until the rules were tightened, 10 clubs in the Premier League and English Football League, including Liverpool and Everton, had been able to admit supporters.

Man City return to training after virus outbreak London (AFP) – Manchester City were due to return to training on Wednesday after no new positive cases of coronavirus were reported following the latest round of testing. City re-tested their first-team squad and staff after Monday’s Premier League fixture at Everton was postponed due to previous positive tests for Covid-19. City announced two players — Gabriel Jesus and Kyle Walker — as well as two members of staff had tested positive on Christmas Day.  Three further positive tests were reported on Monday ahead of the scheduled game at Goodison Park. More tests will take place later in the week, the results of which will determine whether Sunday’s trip to Chelsea and next Wednesday’s League Cup semi-final at Manchester United can go ahead. The club’s training complex has reopened after deep cleaning. “Manchester City FC can confirm that first-team training will resume at City Football Academy this afternoon,” a club statement said. “The full Covid-19 bubble underwent testing yesterday (Tuesday) and results have so far revealed no new positive cases.” City’s game at Everton was the second Premier League fixture to be called off due to coronavirus after Newcastle’s clash with Aston Villa earlier this month. It has since been followed by Wednesday’s encounter between Tottenham and Fulham. There have been calls for the Premier League to halt all games in a “circuit-breaker” but organisers intend for the competition to continue.

Balotelli finds target on Monza debut Milan (AFP) – Mario Balotelli got off to a flying start for Monza on Wednesday after bagging his first goal for his new club just three minutes into his debut for Silvio Berlusconi’s ambitious team. Italy international Balotelli signed a deal until June for the Serie B side earlier this month and made an immediate impact when he met Carlos Augusto’s cross to put them ahead in a 3-0 win over league leaders Salernitana. Balotelli, who had been without a team since the summer before signing for the club from just outside Milan, also had a goal ruled out for a clear offside before he was substituted just after the hour mark. Antonino Barilla put the hosts two up just before the break when he slammed home from close range, and substitute Marco Armellino made sure of the three points which take Monza just two points behind Salernitana when he added a third deep into stoppage time. Third-placed Monza are also one point away from the two automatic promotion spots as former AC Milan chiefs Berlusconi and Adriano Galliani target a place Serie A next season. Four-time Italian prime minister Berlusconi purchased Monza in September 2018 for around three million euros (today $3.7 million) having sold Milan for 740 million euros in April 2017. Balotelli played under the pair at Milan between 2013 and 2014 and then on loan from Liverpool for the 2015-16 Serie A season. He arrived at Milan in January 2013 and scored 12 goals to help the ‘Rossoneri’ reach the following season’s Champions League. Balotelli also rejoins former Milan teammate Kevin Prince Boateng, who signed for Monza in September and had a hand in their second goal on Wednesday. The 30-year-old, who has scored 14 times in 36 appearances for Italy, played for his hometown team Brescia last season but couldn’t do anything to stop them from being relegated to Serie B. He has had a turbulent career since bursting on the scene as a talented teenager at Inter Milan in 2007, going on to play in the team that won the treble under Jose Mourinho in 2010. Balotelli also won the Premier League title with Manchester City in 2012 before shining in that year’s European championships, where he helped Italy reach the final. He has also played for Nice and Marseille in France but has failed to live up to the promise of the early stage of his career.

NBCSN’s Premier League coverage has turned into a mixed bag after 7 years as industry leader In the seven and a half years, NBC Sports Group have televised the Premier League across their various platforms. For the most part, U.S. fans have been very satisfied with the level of coverage they have received. But a strong case can be made that NBC’s best days of covering Premier League football are behind them. With Premier League rights coming up for bid next year for either a three or six year period beginning with the 2022-23 season, the time has never been better to review where NBC’s coverage has recently fallen short of the mark. When NBC embarked on broadcasting the Premier League in 2013, for an initial three-year period, they set an incredibly high standard for presentation and production. World Soccer Talk visited NBC Sports Group’s Stamford, CT campus in the early days of NBC’s coverage of the Premier League. What we found then, and was conveyed over-the-air was a level of seriousness in covering a club soccer competition that at the time was unprecedented on American television. In the summer of 2015, NBC’s rights to air the Premier League were extended a further six seasons, ending with the 2021-22 campaign. At the time, fans rejoiced as the fear of access to and presentation of the league backsliding to pre-2013 levels was real. However, during the course of this current six-year contract, NBC seems to have — of late — regressed relative to the competition that airs soccer in the United States. Let’s look at some of the key points related to NBC’s recent coverage shortfalls. Less insightful studio punditry The usefulness of NBC’s pre- and post-match programming was already waning last season, but the loss of Kyle Martino, the network’s most analytical Premier League studio pundit, has been glaring this season. Tim Howard, his replacement, brings a different perspective and skill set to the job – one that viewers should appreciate as a recently retired player who has either played with or for a number of current managers in the league. But Howard doesn’t quite have the ability to break down matches the way Martino did, though he has recently improved. Additionally, NBC’s emphasis even before the loss of Martino has shifted from covering the league as a whole to blowing up any story about the “big six” clubs that claim a disproportionate percentage of American fans. NBC’s studio team will spend countless hours discussing Liverpool or Manchester United, but seemingly ignore Brighton or Fulham. In NBC’s early days of covering the league, they spent lots of studio time focusing on every aspect of the competition, but at some point shifted to a top-heavy approach. Danny Higginbotham’s addition to the studio team in the last few weeks has been a welcome one. The former Stoke City defender has an uncanny knowledge of the league and has an immense ability to talk about clubs outside the “big six.” Presenter Rebecca Lowe has gone from being a gold standard studio host to someone who oftentimes asks the wrong questions or even the laziest ones. This may be less on Lowe and more on the drift of the NBC presentation in general. Many of the shows Lowe hosts are sprinkled with light entertainment features, something NBC always did, but now seem to take up more programming space than ever. We have seen a clear shift that has taken NBC’s studio emphasis from unique insight to a focus on entertainment. Less informative Steve Bower’s regular appearances on Monday’s gave an insight not otherwise present on NBC’s Premier League programming. Prior to this, Bower had regularly hosted NBC’s studio, and served as a second lead commentator. Gary Lineker’s departure from NBC has left the network without a regular pitchside studio for big matches as well the latest from Goalhanger films that featured several documentaries hosted or produced by Lineker about non ”big six” clubs. Semi-regular features with Mark Clattenburg on officiating were also very useful and informative for viewers. Those are now virtually non-existent on the network. Less original reporting It was out of NBC’s control, but Neil Ashton’s decision to leave journalism and become a public relations professional in January 2020 left a huge void in NBC’s presentation. Rather than replace Ashton, NBC has, like in the case of Bower and Clattenburg, filled the void with more “big six” studio talk and fluffy entertainment driven features. To have a complete studio production to wrap-around matches, you need someone who breaks the news or can speculate in an educated fashion about potential news. The lack of original reporting or analysis of news stories is a huge miss for NBC. Furthermore, replacing Ashton’s insight with occasional commentary from NBC’s sister network Sky Sports News is arguably less useful than doing nothing. More Sensationalism Perhaps it is the influence of Sky, now owned by NBCUniversal parent Comcast, but NBC’s studio now seems obsessed with any scandalous story or ones involving large personalities. If a controversy erupts involving Jose Mourinho, Jurgen Klopp or Paul Pogba, viewers can expect NBC to devote much of its studio time to discussing this rather than the action on the pitch. While it has always been a part of any Premier League studio presentation to discuss controversies involving the biggest personalities in the division, NBC has very visibly increased emphasis on these topics in recent seasons. The new CBS standard CBS’ acquisition of the U.S. rights for UEFA club competitions in English has changed the game completely in terms of studio production and match commentary. The studio hosted by Kate Abdo and featuring the likes of Micah Richards, Roberto Martinez and Jamie Carragher has created a healthy balance of superb cutting-edge analysis with light-hearted entertainment mixed in. This is what NBC once did, but has shifted recently toward a more entertainment-focus with an unhealthy dose of sensationalism on topics like Paul Pogba and Jose Mourinho. CBS has also brought in at various times some of the best English-language reporters to discuss their areas of speciality in continental football. This is something severely lacking in NBC’s coverage, especially after the loss of Ashton. In addition, CBS brought to match commentary two of the definitive voices of English-language soccer broadcasts in Clive Tyldesley and Peter Drury. NBC’s over reliance on Arlo White to work multiple matches each weekend and often double as a post-match studio host or analyst needs freshening up. White remains popular and has a very Americanized commentary style. But the loss of Bower has left White with too much to do. It’s time for more commentary firepower based in the UK if NBC does plan to retain Premier League broadcast rights beyond the summer of 2022. Summary It is indisputable that NBC has most definitely shifted its emphasis from covering the entire league well to more entertainment and a “top six” focus. But it can be argued that NBC is just responding to what the market wants. After all, most Americans support “big six” clubs. And consistently in our Twitter polling, NBC studio shows and personalities remain the most popular among American soccer fandom. The coverage also remains “comfortable” as Premier League fans are accustomed to the routine of watching NBC with the same studio team and commentators. However, my view is that as CBS’ coverage penetrates deeper into the consciousness of American fans, even those big club fans will find NBC’s coverage inferior by comparison. The recent addition of Higginbotham (who also does work for CBS Sports HQ) is a step in the right direction. Let’s hope it’s the first of many. If NBC does plan to retain the Premier League broadcast rights in the United States, an upgrade to or maybe even a complete overhaul of the presentation needs to be seriously considered to breathe new life into their broadcasters.

In the seven and a half years, NBC Sports Group have televised the Premier League across their various platforms. For the most part, U.S. fans have been very satisfied with the level of coverage they have received. But a strong case can be made that NBC’s best days of covering Premier League football are behind them.
