England women rewrite record books in 20-0 thrashing of Latvia London (AFP) – Ellen White broke England Women’s all-time scoring record as the Lionesses recorded their biggest ever victory by crushing Latvia 20-0 in World Cup qualifying on Tuesday. White scored twice early on to take her level with and then past Kelly Smith’s mark of 46 goals, before completing her hat-trick shortly after the break. The Manchester City striker was one of four hat-trick-scorers on the night. Lauren Hemp netted four times, while Beth Mead and substitute Alessia Russo also registered trebles. Beth England notched a brace, and there were also goals from Ella Toone, Georgia Stanway, Jess Carter, Jill Scott and Jordan Nobbs on a historic evening in Doncaster. The result smashed the Lionesses previous record win of 13-0 against Hungary in 2005. England also hit double figures last month when the sides met in Riga with a 10-0 win. It was a sixth win from six Group D games for England, their first six fixtures under Sarina Wiegman – a sequence in which they have registered 43 goals and conceded none. They lead Austria and Northern Ireland by five points with four qualifiers remaining.

Juve see off Salernitana, Atalanta close in on summit Milan (AFP) – Juventus escaped Salernitana with a hard-fought 2-0 win on Tuesday which brought some positivity after a difficult week, while Atalanta are on the heels of Serie A’s leaders following a Mario Pasalic-inspired 4-0 win over Venezia. Paulo Dybala and Alvaro Morata struck the goals which gave struggling Juve the points at the Stadio Arechi but they stay seventh, seven points behind Atalanta who sit fourth in the final Champions League spot. Dybala lashed home the opener in the 21st minute after a neat one-two with Dejan Kulusevski and 10 minutes later Juve thought they had doubled their lead through captain Giorgio Chiellini. However after the veteran defender had celebrated pushing home the rebound following Juan Cuadrado’s free-kick thwacking the post, the goal was ruled out by VAR officials who spotted Moise Kean straying fractionally offside as the Colombian struck his shot. From there Juventus dominated proceedings but could count themselves very lucky to enter the final half an hour level with their promoted opponents when, after a confused Juve defence allowed a cross to wriggle out to Luca Ranieri, the 22-year-old could only fire onto the post from close range. And with 20 minutes remaining Morata made sure of the points for the away side with a deft flick after Federico Bernardeschi’s deflected shot fizzed into him. Dybala then skied a stoppage-time penalty and wasted an opportunity to make the scoreline more emphatic, but few in black and white will care after two embarrassing defeats to Chelsea and Atalanta and a criminal investigation into club accounts and transfer dealings. – Pasalic inspires Atalanta – Pasalic hit a hat-trick as Atalanta continued their superb recent run of form in Bergamo to move within four points of league leaders Napoli, who face Sassuolo on Wednesday. After an impressive win at Juve at the weekend, Atalanta won their fourth straight league match thanks to Pasalic’s treble and a Teun Koopmeiners strike which puts them level on 31 points with Inter Milan in third. Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta are unbeaten in eight in Italy and cannot be discounted from the title race after swatting promoted Venezia aside despite making a raft of changes from Saturday’s win over Juve in Turin. Pasalic made it an uphill battle for the away side when he collected Josip Ilicic’s perfect through ball before sliding in his seventh-minute opener, and the Croat rifled home the second five minutes later. Venezia never looked like responding from their early setback and Koopmeiners made absolutely sure of the points just before the hour mark, arrowing in his first ever Serie A goal from the edge of the box after a neat exchange of passes between Ilicic, Pasalic and Giuseppe Pezzella. And Pasalic completed a perfect evening for him and his high-flying team with a simple finish 10 minutes later following dazzling dribbling from Luis Muriel. In Florence, Dusan Vlahovic extended his lead at the top of the league’s scoring charts with his 12th of the season to put Fiorentina ahead in the 32nd minute after Jose Callejon had levelled Manolo Gabbiadini’s 15th-minute opener for the away side. Riccardo Sottil made it three just before the break to earn Vincenzo Italiano’s side, who collapsed at Empoli at the weekend, a welcome 3-1 win which puts them on 24 points in sixth, above Juve on goals scored.

Norwich deny 10-man Newcastle first win of the season Newcastle (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Teemu Pukki denied 10-man Newcastle a first win all season as Norwich earned a 1-1 draw at St James’ Park on Tuesday, but wasted a huge chance to deepen the Magpies’ relegation fears. Newcastle were a man short for more than 80 minutes after Ciaran Clark saw red for pulling down Pukki. However, Norwich were largely wasteful in trying to make that advantage count and fell behind to Callum Wilson’s penalty on the hour mark. Pukki smashed home on the volley to equalise 11 minutes from time and Norwich should have claimed a massive three points in stoppage time when Martin Dubravka saved from Pierre Lees-Melou. Eddie Howe’s men edge to within five points of safety in their bid to minimise the damage before they can turn to the Saudi sovereign wealth fund to strengthen in the January transfer window. Howe was on the sideline as Newcastle boss at St James’ Park for the first time, having missed the 3-3 draw with Brentford 10 days ago after testing positive for coronavirus. The former Bournemouth boss could not have asked for a worse start to a crucial clash between the bottom two before kick-off when Clark inexplicably hauled down Pukki as he threatened to burst clear on goal. No side has conceded more goals in the Premier League than Newcastle this season, but Norwich are also the lowest scorers and their lack of quality in the final third was obvious as they laboured to create chances despite dominating possession. Newcastle looked to have snatched a first win under Saudi ownsership when Billy Gilmour was penalised for handball inside his own box after a VAR review. Tim Krul nearly denied his former club as he got a hand to Wilson’s spot-kick, but saw the ball rebound in off the underside of the bar. Allan Saint-Maximin blazed over with a good chance to double Newcastle’s lead on the counter-attack. And that proved costly as Norwich finally produced a moment of quality. Dimitris Giannoulis helped the ball back into the box after Dubravka flapped at a cross and Pukki smashed home a volley into the top corner. Norwich then piled on the pressure in the closing stages, but failed to find the winner as Dubravka made amends for his part in the equaliser with a crucial late save. The Canaries do at least remain unbeaten in three games under new manager Dean Smith as they moved to within two points of safety.

Leeds chief claims wealth redistribution rewards incompetence London (AFP) – Leeds chief executive Angus Kinnear said proposals for greater wealth distribution in English football would only reward “incompetence” as he compared a transfer levy on Premier League clubs to Maoism and the Great Chinese Famine. The transfer levy and an independent regulator were just two of 47 recommendations made by a fan-led review of football governance which was published last week. Kinnear said he supported many of the recommendations, but that those two “are as flawed as they are radical”. Writing in his programme notes ahead of Tuesday’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace, Kinnear said: “Enforcing upon football a philosophy akin to Maoist collective agriculturalism (which students of ‘The Great Leap Forward’ will know culminated in the greatest famine in history) will not make the English game fairer, it will kill the competition which is its very lifeblood.” Misguided economic policies during the Great Leap Forward contributed to mass famine which caused tens of millions of deaths in China. Leeds returned to the top-flight in 2020 after a 16-year absence that began with a financial meltdown in 2004. Kinnear said any extra funds that flowed down the pyramid from the Premier League would simply go back out in player wages and transfer fees. “Redistribution of wealth will simply favour the lowest common denominator. Clubs who excel in recruitment, player development or commercial enterprise will be punished, while less capable ownership will be rewarded for incompetence,” he added. Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said last week the organisation is open to an independent regulator, but labelled some recommendations “too radical”. Masters dismissed the English Football League’s request to be given 25 percent of all pooled broadcast revenue. “That would be a disaster. Value has to be retained where it is generated otherwise that value can’t be generated,” he said. “Premier League clubs have to be able to attract the best players, talent and managers and create that incredible competitiveness.”

Ex-Argentina, Colombia coach Pekerman handed Venezuela job Caracas (AFP) – Veteran Argentine coach Jose Pekerman was appointed Tuesday to take over the Venezuela national team, tasked with leading them to the 2026 World Cup. “I know I’m in the right place. We have one idea in common: leave a mark,” the 72-year-old Pekerman said during his presentation in Caracas. Venezuela are the only member of CONMEBOL never to have qualified for a World Cup. They are already out of the running for next year’s tournament in Qatar with four qualifiers still to play. Pekerman coached Argentina to the 2006 World Cup, losing on penalties to hosts Germany in the quarter-finals. He led Colombia to the same stage of the 2014 World Cup and then to the last 16 in Russia.   He replaces Leo Gonzalez, who was in charge on an interim basis after the resignation of Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro in August over unpaid wages.

EPL Commentators on NBC: Nov. 30 through Dec. 2 For the first time this season, the Premier League plays a consistent schedule of midweek fixtures. This Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, there are ten games lined up in England’s top flight. Additionally, there are significant games in terms of the race for European qualification. Getting things started on Tuesday, a bottom-of-the-table clash as Newcastle hosts Norwich sets the table for the week. The two clubs sit six and three points, respectively, from safety. Then, on Wednesday, the bulk of the games take place. There are six games starting at either 2:30 p.m. or 3:15 p.m. ET. Among them, West Ham United looks to stop its two-game skid against Brighton. Also, a rejuvenated and revitalized Aston Villa under Steven Gerrard looks for its biggest result yet at home against Manchester City. Manchester City made up some ground this past weekend on league leaders Chelsea, but the Sky Blues do trail the London side by just one point. Also on Wednesday, this season’s first Merseyside Derby occurs between Liverpool and Everton. Liverpool is another team firmly in the title hunt, trailing Chelsea by two points. Everton, who earlier in the season looked to be making a top-four push, is now winless in its last-seven games. In that span, Everton has just two points. It looks to stop that streak against the club’s biggest rival. Wrapping up action on Thursday, another rivalry sees its first rendition of the season. Manchester United, coming off a draw on the road against Chelsea, hosts an Arsenal team on a hot run of form. After a dismal start to the season, the Gunners sit in fourth. Contrarily, Manchester United’s blazing start to the season now sees them sit eighth in the league. Despite the midweek fixtures, each team continues action this upcoming weekend. Gerrard hopes Grealish gets warm welcome on Villa return London (AFP) – Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard said on Tuesday Jack Grealish has earned the right to a warm reception when he returns to Villa Park for the first time as a Manchester City player this week. Grealish moved for a Premier League record £100 million ($133 million) in August after making over 200 appearances for his boyhood club since making his debut aged 18. The England international has been sidelined in recent weeks, but returned to training on Monday and could feature against his former club. “Jack very much deserves a warm welcome and I have no doubt he’ll get that,” said Gerrard, who has made a perfect start to his Premier League coaching career with two wins from two games. “This is his club and it will be when his career is over, because he was here as a little boy and he has come through the academy. “The club have benefited a lot from what Jack has given and we very much wish him well moving forward for the remainder of his career. Obviously not for 90 minutes tomorrow,” he added before Wednesday’s fixture. Back-to-back wins over Brighton and Crystal Palace have propelled Villa seven points clear of the relegation zone. However, Gerrard is well aware of the step up in class his side face when the champions come calling. “The two wins have helped in terms of the feel-good factor around the place,” said the former Liverpool captain. “But we’re aware that a real good side is coming into town and this will be a big acid test for us.”

Messi looking to prove a point in Ligue 1 after seventh Ballon d’Or Paris (AFP) – Lionel Messi was awarded a record-extending seventh Ballon d’Or on Monday, but for the first time in his illustrious career, there was a mixed reaction to his success. The Argentinian great has made a slow start to life in France after a turbulent year which saw him bid a tearful farewell to Barcelona and join Paris Saint-Germain. But there have been sparks of life in recent weeks, with his first Ligue 1 goal followed by three assists in PSG’s 3-1 win at Saint-Etienne on Sunday. Messi admitted his latest Ballon d’Or win was largely down to leading his country to a major international title for the first time in the Copa America, although he did also finish as La Liga top-scorer last season in a weak Barcelona team which has since stumbled from crisis to crisis. After scoring just four goals in 11 appearances this term for PSG, the 34-year-old will need an upturn in fortunes to be named the world’s best player again next year. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was among the leading football figures to express surprise that Messi beat Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski to the prize. But PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino was in no doubt that his player deserved to become the first from the French side to win the Ballon d’Or, despite failing to fully fire for the capital club. “He totally deserves the Ballon d’Or. There is no debate on this subject,” Pochettino insisted ahead of PSG’s game against high-flying Nice on Wednesday. “I can understand that in other countries some do not agree, but I think he deserved it. “We also hope that it is the first day of the makings of what can become an eighth Ballon d’Or. We are all delighted to have Messi here.” Messi, along with midfielder Leandro Paredes, did not train on Tuesday due to illness, but he will want to be fit to face third-placed Nice, especially with Neymar sidelined for up to eight weeks by an ankle injury. PSG are already 12 points clear of second-placed Rennes in the French top flight, despite a series of underwhelming performances this season after a raft of high-profile signings. Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe have scored only 11 times in 31 league appearances between them. They will need to improve to make a mark in the Champions League, where they had to settle for second in their group behind Manchester City. Nice, bankrolled by British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos, will be no pushovers this week though, despite a shock home loss to lowly Metz last weekend. Player to watch: Amine Gouiri Nice forward Gouiri enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last season with 12 Ligue 1 goals and has continued to go from strength to strength this term. The 21-year-old already has eight goals and has been a key player in Nice’s impressive start under coach Christophe Galtier, who led Lille to the title earlier this year. Gouiri will be hoping to make a mark when he lines up against some of the world’s best players at the Parc des Princes. Key stats 4: Messi failed to muster a goal or assist in his first five Ligue 1 matches. He has four in two games since (one goal, three assists). 4: Brest were in the drop zone after failing to win any of their first 11 games. They have won their last four. 12: Years since Nice beat PSG at the Parc des Princes. Tuchel tells Jorginho to ignore Ballon d’Or snub London (AFP) – Thomas Tuchel said on Tuesday Chelsea midfielder Jorginho does not need Ballon d’Or recognition to prove he is among the world’s best after the Italian finished third in the prestigious player of the year award. Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi won the Ballon d’Or for a seventh time on Monday, with Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski second in the voting and Jorginho third. Jorginho helped Chelsea win the Champions League last season before emerging as a key figure in Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph. And, while the 29-year-old was unable to cap a memorable year with the Ballon d’Or, the Blues boss is more interested in helping his players achieve collective success rather than personal plaudits. “I have huge doubts about individual awards in this game because the game is very complex, it’s related to a lot of luck and it’s a team effort,” Tuchel told reporters. “Not one single player can win a match of football, it’s not possible. “If individual players shine, it’s always due to the team effort and that’s why it (club of the year) is a nice award.” Asked whether he had expected Lewandowski to win the Ballon d’Or after two superb seasons in a row, Tuchel said: “I take my rights to not have an opinion on this one. “We had ourselves a player (Jorginho) who won all major trophies and was hugely involved, so it would not have been a surprise if he had lifted the trophy. “It was a choice and it’s an election and when it’s elected you have to take it and if you like it or not you accept it and life goes on pretty easy.” Chelsea were voted the club of the year in the Paris awards ceremony and Tuchel added: “It shows the ambition of the club and this is what drives us, this is what makes us happy, and what motivates us. “When you have a lot of nominees and get a prize like yesterday, it’s the proof that we showed what the club is all about and how the club is built.” After winning the Champions League in his first season, Tuchel has the Premier League title in his sights, with his side one point clear at the top ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Watford. Tuchel, who is already without injured trio Ben Chilwell, Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante, will await late fitness tests on Jorginho, Reece James and Timo Werner following Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United. “For tomorrow, we have some players in doubt, maybe we need a bit more time, a bit more examination to re-evaluate the status,” he said. “It’s Reece James, Jorginho and Timo Werner. They all trained today with us and there will be some last-minute decisions about this.”

Klopp urges Liverpool not to lash out in revenge at Everton Liverpool (AFP) – Jurgen Klopp said Liverpool cannot lose their heads looking for revenge when they face Everton in the Merseyside derby on Wednesday. Virgil van Dijk suffered a season-ending cruciate knee ligament injury when the sides last met at Goodison Park 13 months ago due to a wild lunge by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Thiago Alcantara was also sidelined for months by Richarlison’s late challenge in a bad-tempered contest despite the absence of fans. For the first time in nearly three years, a derby will take place in front of a full house at Goodison as Everton aim to halt their slide by damaging Liverpool’s title challenge. But Klopp said the Reds have to concentrate on letting their football do the talking. “We play football. We are still an emotional team but you have to use the emotion in the right way and that’s the plan,” Klopp said on Tuesday. “We know what our supporters want and we try to fulfil their dreams and wishes. “Derby games are more in focus but from our point it is a football game which we have to approach like a normal one.” Van Dijk scored his first goal since returning to full fitness on Saturday in a 4-0 demolition of Southampton as Liverpool closed to within two points of league leaders Chelsea. Klopp believes it will be impossible for the Dutchman to forget what happened on his last trip to Goodison, but backed his talismanic centre-back to cope with the experience. “Virgil is very experienced and he has now these kind of situations constantly since he was back where he has always dealt with all these kind of things,” added Klopp.  “He has to be completely free of all things he could have in his mind because of one issue in the past.” Former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is under increasing pressure as Everton manager after a run of just two points from a possible 21. The Toffees have been without a number of key players due to injury. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has not featured since August, while Richarlison, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Yerry Mina have also spent long spells out. Doucoure made his return in a 1-0 defeat to Brentford on Sunday, while Richarlison is available after missing that match through suspension. Benitez’s appointment was not popular among the Everton support for his history as a Champions League winning coach with Liverpool. But the Spaniard is hoping that a first home win against their local rivals since 2010 can revive Everton’s season. “It’s a massive game for us, the derby is always an opportunity to put things right,” said Benitez. “A derby is always special in every country but I live in the city so the passion is massive and really important for everyone. “That’s why I want to win and do well because for us as a club, it’s important to bring back the confidence and use an opportunity to change things for the rest of the season.”

Guardiola concerned by Man City’s injury ’emergency’ London (AFP) – Pep Guardiola said on Tuesday that Manchester City are dealing with an injury “emergency” as the wounded Premier League champions limp into the hectic December schedule. Kevin de Bruyne is yet to return to training as City’s star midfielder recovers from the coronavirus, while Ferran Torres is a long-term absentee with a foot injury Phil Foden and Jack Grealish have also struggled with injuries, although both could play some part in City’s trip to Aston Villa on Wednesday. Guardiola will also be without the suspended Aymeric Laporte at Villa Park and he believes City face a difficult spell heading towards Christmas. “We have an emergency in the squad. We have few, few, few people,” Guardiola told reporters. “We never complain when it is not possible for players to play for injuries or red cards. “I trust a lot in the squad and other players who come in but we are in real trouble for December, the toughest month of the year.” Guardiola is holding out hope that England midfielder Grealish could return to face his former club on Wednesday. Grealish, who joined City from Villa in the close-season, has missed their last three games with a knock sustained on international duty. Foden is also hoping to prove his fitness after being sidelined for the wins against Paris Saint-Germain and West Ham in the past week. “In the training sessions, for Jack yesterday was his first minutes with the team. For Phil too,” Guardiola said. “Today both will be tested to see if they can travel tomorrow to Birmingham to play. “Kevin still didn’t train. He’s negative from the last test but he could not train.” Despite their fitness issues, City are just one point behind leaders Chelsea and have won their last five games in all competitions. Not satisfied with that run, Guardiola urged his team to be even more ruthless. “The way we have done so far has been exceptional. We have the toughest month ahead so we have to continue,” Guardiola said. “In the top scorers list we are not there. Look at (Liverpool’s) Mane, Salah and Jota, how many they scored, we are not in the best seven, eight or nine. We defend and attack as a team or we will not survive.” On Wednesday, Guardiola will come up against Steven Gerrard for the first time since the former Liverpool captain became a manager. Gerrard has won his first two matches since leaving Scottish champions Rangers to take charge at Villa. “If he’s a manager in the Premier League, he’s already a good manager,” Guardiola said. “I don’t believe there is one single manager in the Premier League, or even the Championship, who is not good. They are of quality. “I can imagine everybody makes a step forward to convince the manager and because of that they got two results against tough teams like Brighton and Palace.”

London (AFP) – Pep Guardiola said on Tuesday that Manchester City are dealing with an injury “emergency” as the wounded Premier League champions limp into the hectic December schedule. “I trust a lot in the squad and other players who come in but we are in real trouble for December, the toughest month of the year.” Guardiola is holding out hope that Eng

Benzema not upset after Ballon d’Or snub – Ancelotti Madrid (AFP) – Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said on Tuesday Karim Benzema is “not crying” about missing out on winning his first Ballon d’Or. Lionel Messi, who left Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain last summer, won the Ballon d’Or for a record seventh time on Monday. The 34-year-old Messi led Argentina to the Copa America title in July and has scored 40 goals in 2021, including 28 for Barca. Benzema, 33, finished fourth behind Messi, Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski, and Chelsea midfielder Jorginho. In his Madrid press conference on Tuesday, Ancelotti was asked if the Ballon d’Or “still has credibility” following Messi’s latest victory. “We have to respect the decision. Messi won and he’s still a great player,” Ancelotti said. “For the players, individual awards are important and they give motivation – but if they don’t win them, it doesn’t matter. “Benzema has had a great season and finished fourth and now he will have extra motivation to finish first next year.” Ancelotti added: “It’s an important award but it’s still individual. Karim Benzema isn’t crying about not winning it, nor Thibaut Courtois. They have accepted it without any problems.” Ancelotti said he would have voted Benzema, Vinicius Junior and Luka Modric as his top three. Vinicius scored a scintillating late winner against Sevilla on Sunday as Madrid moved four points clear at the top of La Liga.  They could extend that advantage to seven points by beating Athletic Bilbao at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday. “I don’t know if we are favourites for La Liga but we’re playing well and we’re consistent,” Ancelotti said. Ancelotti also said Madrid will not sign any players in January but admitted unhappy players could be allowed to leave. Some players like Isco and Eden Hazard have found themselves out of favour under Ancelotti this season. Ancelotti said Hazard will be available against Athletic Bilbao but insisted the Belgium attacker “must improve his fitness because he’s had problems of different kinds.” “I don’t like January signings much. If we have players who aren’t happy, it’s something we can think about but we are not going to sign anyone.  “We have enough to compete until the end of the season.”

Carrick in charge of Man Utd for Arsenal clash as Rangnick awaits visa London (AFP) – Michael Carrick will stay in charge of Manchester United for their clash against Arsenal this week as interim manager Ralf Rangnick awaits his work visa, the Old Trafford club said on Tuesday. Rangnick on Monday agreed to join United from Lokomotiv Moscow, where he was the head of sports and development. But he will not be on the bench when Arsenal visit on Thursday due to legal red tape. “Ralf Rangnick was announced as interim manager on Monday but, while the club follows the regulatory process around a work visa, Carrick will continue at the helm,” a United statement said. “Michael has communicated this to players and staff at Carrington in a busy week for the club.” The 63-year-old German will eventually take charge at United until the end of this season before moving into a two-year consultancy role at the troubled Premier League outfit. Carrick has been working as United’s caretaker boss since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking. The former United midfielder, who had served as Solskjaer’s assistant, has overseen a 2-0 Champions League win at Villarreal and Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Premier League leaders Chelsea. They are then scheduled to play their final Champions League group fixture at home to Swiss club Young Boys on December 8. Ronaldo hits back at claim he wants to beat Messi’s Ballon d’Or haul London (AFP) – Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has hit back at a “disrespectful” claim that his only remaining ambition is to win the Ballon d’Or more times than Lionel Messi. Paris Saint-Germain forward Messi won the prestigious award for a seventh time on Monday. Ronaldo, who finished sixth in this year’s voting, has earned the Ballon d’Or five times. The Ballon d’Or, given to the best male and female footballers of the year, is voted on by 180 journalists and presented by France Football. Pascal Ferre, the editor in chief of France Football, was quoted in the New York Times recently saying Ronaldo told him his primary motivation was to retire having won the accolade more often than his old rival Messi. Ronaldo, 36, took to Instagram to deny that suggestion. “Today’s outcome explains Pascal Ferre’s statements last week, when he said that I confided in him that my only ambition was to finish my career with more Ballon d’Ors than Lionel Messi,” Ronaldo wrote. “Pascal Ferre lied, he used my name to promote himself and to promote the publication he works for. “It is unacceptable that the person responsible for awarding such a prestigious prize could lie in this way, in absolute disrespect for someone who has always respected France Football and the Ballon d’Or. “The biggest ambition of my career is to win national and international titles for the clubs I represent and for the national team in my country. “The biggest ambition of my career is to be a good example for all those who are or want to be professional footballers.  “The biggest ambition of my career is to leave my name written in golden letters in the history of world football.” Ronaldo, who did not attend Monday’s prize-giving event in Paris, last won the Ballon d’Or in 2017. This year marked the first time the former Juventus and Real Madrid striker finished outside the top five voting since 2010. Messi’s seventh success extended his lead in the male category after he set the record with his sixth in 2019. Barcelona and Spain midfielder Alexia Putellas won the 2021 women’s Ballon d’Or.

The Sisterhood book sheds light on ’99 USWNT World Cup winners In 2021, we are witnessing a change in U.S. women’s soccer. As the national team prepares for the 2023 World Cup, a number of players head to camp to form the next generation of American stars. The task in front of these young women is tall. They must replace the on-field production of Carli Lloyd or other players nearing the end of their careers. But, it is not just their on-the-pitch production needed. Equally if not more so, their off-the-field leadership to push for equality and respect in the boardroom of U.S. Soccer and even sports as a whole is key. The outgoing generation worked tirelessly outside of the game for changes in favor of equality. In fact, only the 99ers rival the current core’s progressive actions. Rob Goldman’s well-timed new book The Sisterhood: The 99ers and the Rise of U.S. Women’s Soccer to coincides with this current generational change. The Sisterhood Goldman’s book is an oral history of the rise of women’s soccer in the U.S. The book starts in 1985 with the creation of a women’s soccer team to play in the Italian Mundialito Cup. It builds on that experience to show how the soccer team grew from that tournament and the ones following. Using interviews with famous players like Michelle Akers plus quotes from Anson Dorrance and Tony DiCicco, the book builds a narrative to show how U.S. women’s soccer got to 1999. For example, the 1985 Mundialito Cup introduced the team to European-style soccer. Also, it began OOSSAAA chant that became a player tradition. Their next trip to Italy showed they could compete with European powers, and they used that to build confidence to actually win a tournament in China. The major takeaway from these narratives and anecdotes in The Sisterhood is that 1999 did not happen in a void. Key players like Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain, and others were nurtured by older national team players who had learned from their peers. This of course happens to all national teams. Yet, not all national teams see a jump in 25 years from existing to the best team in the world. As the book shows, the 99ers are actually the 85ers-99ers, a composite experience that changed the sport. Anecdotes and Evidence The Sisterhood is heavy on interviews, forgoing a list of historical details covered in other books. Goldman tends to focus on the managers and star players as his sources. Therefore, we do not read too many earth-shattering details about the national team between 1985 and 1999. By not talking to as many fringe players or U.S. Soccer sources, the book misses some details or parts of the story that may make it more complete. However, this book is not a complete telling. Rather, it is a timeline of events building up to the 1999 World Cup. Essentially, Goldman writes to focus readers on the why, not as much the what. This is what makes this book different from others about the early women’s national teams. From the perspectives of those who were most critical in forming it, you hear a narrative about what things, experiences and conflicts got the U.S. to the celebration at the Rose Bowl in 1999. When reading the description on the book jacket, Goldman and the editors do not claim this is a “definitive” story or a “tell all”. It promises to take you “onto the pitch and into the minds” of key figures in the team. That is what I respected about this book – it does not overpromise, it over-delvers. In this relatively short read, you walk away with a good understanding of how the U.S. got to where it is in women’s soccer and why that was not a guaranteed outcome. The 1999 experience did not spontaneously happen. This book is not the first to tell how and why, but its laser focus on why through the perspective of the key figures to get it there makes this a good read. As we celebrate a new generation of savvy U.S. women’s soccer players who will succeed on the pitch and off, The Sisterhood is a good reference point (and a very good read) on how the first generation to achieve such success did it. Messi wins Ballon d’Or for seventh time as Putellas crowned women’s winner Paris (AFP) – Lionel Messi admitted winning the Copa America with Argentina might have been the determining factor in him claiming the men’s Ballon d’Or prize for the seventh time after a turbulent year, as Spain’s Alexia Putellas took the women’s award. Now 34, Messi pipped much-fancied rivals like Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema to take the award in a glittering ceremony on Monday in Paris, the city he now calls home after leaving boyhood club Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain in August. Despite his tearful goodbye from Barcelona and his relatively underwhelming start to life in France, the jury of journalists from around the world rewarded him in particular for captaining Argentina to their first major international title since 1993.  “Two years ago I thought I was coming into my final years but here I am again back here,” said Messi, who won the last edition of the Ballon d’Or in 2019 before last year’s awards were cancelled due to the pandemic. Messi also won in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and in 2015.  “People were starting to ask me when I was going to retire but now I am here in Paris and I am very happy,” he said at the Chatelet Theatre in central Paris, where he was joined by his wife Antonella Roccuzzo and their three children. “I don’t know how many more years I have left but I hope there will be many because I am really enjoying myself this year. “What I achieved with Argentina was a dream come true. I think I won this trophy thanks to what we did at the Copa America, so I dedicate it to my teammates.” Argentina beat Brazil 1-0 in the final in Rio de Janeiro as Messi won a major title with his country for the first time. He also scored 38 goals in 48 games in his final season with Barcelona and won the Copa del Rey. – Lewandowski second – However Messi has played just 11 times and scored four goals for PSG since joining the French club and there was a feeling that this year might see a different winner. Poland striker Lewandowski would have been a shoe-in in 2020, when he scored 45 goals in 37 games for Bayern, only for the awards to be cancelled. He ended last season with a remarkable 41 Bundesliga goals but had to settle for second place in the voting for the Ballon d’Or, which is organised by France Football magazine and voted for by a panel of journalists from around the world. Lewandowski instead was given a consolation prize for the year’s best goal-scorer and received glowing praise from Messi. “I wanted to say to Robert that it was an honour to go up against him. He deserved to win it last year,” Messi said. Midfielder Jorginho, who won the Champions League with Chelsea and Euro 2020 with Italy, came third, followed by Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema and another Chelsea player, N’Golo Kante. Five-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo came sixth. He was absent from the ceremony. Between them, Messi and Ronaldo have won 12 of the last 13 editions of the Ballon d’Or with the exception coming in 2018 when Luka Modric claimed the prize. – Putellas succeeds Rapinoe – This is just the third year that a women’s Ballon d’Or has been awarded, with Putellas following in the footsteps of Norway’s Ada Hegerberg, winner in 2018, and the United States’ 2019 World Cup superstar Megan Rapinoe. Spain international Putellas, 27, captained Barcelona to victory in this year’s Champions League, scoring a penalty in the final as her side hammered Chelsea 4-0. She also won a Spanish league and cup double with Barca, the club she joined as a teenager in 2012 and who are fast becoming the dominant force in the women’s game. Her Barcelona and Spain teammate Jennifer Hermoso was second, with Sam Kerr of Chelsea and Australia coming in third. “I am sure I won’t be the last Barcelona player to win the prize. This is just the beginning,” said Putellas, who in August was named player of the year by European football’s governing body UEFA.

Messi’s enduring brilliance rewarded with another Ballon d’Or Paris (AFP) – Some might question whether Lionel Messi really deserved to win his latest Ballon d’Or prize ahead of other worthy candidates, but the Argentinian has been rewarded for continuing to be so good for so long. The most turbulent year of Messi’s glittering career, in which he was forced to tearfully bid farewell to Barcelona, ends with him –- at the age of 34 — claiming a record-extending seventh Ballon d’Or for the best player in the world. In Germany they thought it had to be Robert Lewandowski’s year after he missed out 12 months ago when the 2020 edition was scrapped due to the pandemic. Karim Benzema might have had plenty of support in Spain for his remarkable performances with Real Madrid, and Jorginho could stake a claim following a year in which he won the Champions League with Chelsea as well as Euro 2020 with Italy. Yet it is the enduring brilliance of Messi -– who won the last award in 2019 — which stays in the minds of the jurors when it comes to voting. Having joined Paris Saint-Germain in August, he is the first male player to win the award while with a French club since Jean-Pierre Papin of Marseille in 1991, although it was his achievements with Barcelona and with Argentina that counted towards him effectively retaining his crown. Messi tried unsuccessfully to force his departure from Barcelona in August 2020 but he showed no signs of rancour as he stayed put at the Camp Nou and ended last season with 38 goals in 48 games for his boyhood club. – International success at last – These are the kind of remarkable figures that he has made so mundane over the course of his career –- indeed he had actually scored more goals than that in 10 of his previous 11 seasons. Messi was the top scorer in La Liga for the fifth consecutive year with 30 goals and won the Copa del Rey, scoring twice in the final as Barcelona beat Athletic Bilbao 4-0. This will always be remembered as the year his long association with the Catalan giants came to an end, after 672 goals in 778 appearances, a record goal tally for one club. However, 2021 was also the year he finally won a major international title, captaining Argentina to victory in the Copa America with a 1-0 win against Brazil in the final at the Maracana. He scored four goals in the tournament as Argentina won the South American championship for the first time since 1993. “I think I won this trophy thanks to what we did at the Copa America so I dedicate this to my teammates,” he said after being handed his latest Ballon d’Or at the Chatelet Theatre in central Paris. – Unfinished business – However the shame was that hardly any fans were in the stadium to witness Argentina’s Copa America success due to coronavirus restrictions, only adding to the sense that, despite all he has achieved, Messi still has unfinished business. Not least at PSG, where he has so far played just 11 games since arriving in August, and scored just four goals. Messi did provide three assists for the Parisians in a Ligue 1 match on Sunday but it remains to be seen how motivated the Argentinian is by the French league. He has other priorities. “My dream is to win another Champions League,” he said at his unveiling in August, with the last of his four European Cups coming in 2015. Then there is the really big one: the World Cup in Qatar will be underway this time next year and Messi will be 35 by then. That will surely be his last chance to win the greatest trophy of all, and you imagine he would swap his seven Ballons d’Or to get his hands on it.

That was the first major international title of his glittering career, which had been spent entirely with Barcelona before his tearful departure from the Camp Nou in August and subsequent move to Paris Saint-Germain. Messi has played just 11 games for PSG so far, scoring four goals, but he was rewarded as much as anything for his continued brilliance down the years. He has now won the Ballon d’Or twice more than his old rival Cristiano Ronaldo — between them they have won 12 of the last 13 editions with the exception coming in 2018 when Luka Modric claimed the prize. Prolific Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski finished second and Chelsea and Italy midfielder Jorginho was third in the voting by a jury of journalists from around the world. Ballon d’Or sees Barca childhood fan Putellas go down in folklore Madrid (AFP) – Alexia Putellas grew up dreaming of playing for Barcelona and after clinching the treble of league, cup and Champions League last season, her status as a women’s footballing icon was underlined as she claimed the Ballon d’Or on Monday. Unlike the men’s side, Barca’s women swept the board last term with the 27-year-old, who wears “Alexia” on the back of her shirt, at the forefront, months before Lionel Messi’s emotional departure. Attacker Putellas, who turns 28 in February, spent her childhood less than an hour’s car journey from the Camp Nou and she made her first trip to the ground from her hometown of Mollet del Valles, for the Barcelona derby on January 6, 2000. Exactly 21 years later she became the first woman in the modern era to score in the stadium, against Espanyol. Her name was engraved in the club’s history from that day forward, but her story started much earlier. She started playing the sport in school, against boys. “My mum had enough of me coming home with bruises on my legs, so she signed me up at a club so that I stopped playing during break-time,” Putellas said last year. So, with her parent’s insistence, she joined Sabadell before being signed by Barca’s academy. “That’s where things got serious… But you couldn’t envisage, with all one’s power, to make a living from football,” she said. After less than a year with “her” outfit, she moved across town to Espanyol and made her first-team debut in 2010 before losing to Barca in the final of the Copa de la Reina. She then headed south for a season at Valencia-based club Levante before returning “home” in July 2012, signing for Barcelona just two months after her father’s death. In her first term there she helped Barca win the league and cup double, winning the award for player of the match in the final of the latter competition. It was in the following year that she made the step up to the national team and she has gone on to feature in four major tournaments with Spain, winning 92 caps. Last season was her crowning glory as her childhood side won the Primera Division and the Copa de la Reina as well as the Champions League in a matter of weeks, a historic achievement for a Spanish women’s outfit. Individual recognition shortly followed, as she was named UEFA women’s player of the year and Monday’s announcement in Paris made her just the second Spanish player, after Luis Suarez in 1960, to win the much-coveted Ballon d’Or.

Pedri, Donnarumma claim prizes at Ballon d’Or ceremony Paris (AFP) – Spain starlet Pedri won the Kopa Trophy for the best player aged under 21 at the Ballon d’Or awards ceremony in Paris on Monday, while Italy’s Gianluigi Donnarumma was named the best goalkeeper. Barcelona midfielder Pedri, who only turned 19 last Thursday, was a key player for Spain as they reached the semi-finals of the European Championship and featured in their side that lost in the men’s Olympic football final against Brazil in Tokyo. In addition he played 52 games for Barcelona, helping them win the Copa del Rey. Pedri, who joined Barca from Las Palmas last year, recently extended his contract at the Camp Nou to 2026. The Kopa Trophy is named after Raymond Kopa, the Real Madrid and France star of the post-war era who won the Ballon d’Or in 1958. France forward Kylian Mbappe was the inaugural winner of the prize in 2018, and Matthijs de Ligt of Juventus and the Netherlands won it in 2019. There was no Ballon d’Or awards ceremony last year because of the pandemic. Donnarumma won the Yashin Trophy for the best goalkeeper after his outstanding performances in Italy’s glorious Euro 2020 campaign. The 22-year-old left AC Milan for Paris Saint-Germain following the European Championship. Liverpool and Brazil star Alisson was the first winner in 2019 of the Yashin Trophy, named after former USSR icon Lev Yashin.

Putellas is the third winner of the prize, following in the footsteps of Ada Hegerberg, who won the inaugural women’s Ballon d’Or in 2018, and United States World Cup star Megan Rapinoe, winner in 2019. The 2020 Ballon d’Or awards were cancelled because of the pandemic. Putellas captained Barcelona to victory in this year’s Champions League, scoring a penalty in the final as her side hammered Chelsea 4-0 in Gothenburg. She also won a Spanish league and cup double with Barca, the club she joined as a teenager in 2012, and helped her country qualify for the upcoming Women’s Euro in England. Her Barcelona and Spain teammate Jennifer Hermoso finished second in the voting, with Sam Kerr of Chelsea and Australia coming in third. It completes an awards double for Putellas, who in August was named player of the year by European football’s governing body UEFA.

Pedri claims prize for best young player at Ballon d’Or ceremony Paris (AFP) – Barcelona and Spain starlet Pedri won the Kopa Trophy for the best player aged under 21 at the Ballon d’Or awards ceremony in Paris on Monday. The midfielder, who only turned 19 last Thursday, was a key player for Spain as they reached the semi-finals of the European Championship and featured in their side that lost in the men’s Olympic football final against Brazil in Tokyo. PSG star Neymar to miss 6-8 weeks with ankle injury Paris (AFP) – Neymar is expected to be sidelined for between six and eight weeks after sustaining ligament damage to his left ankle, Paris Saint-Germain said on Monday. The Brazil star was stretchered from the pitch in tears after suffering the injury in the final minutes of Sunday’s 3-1 victory at Saint-Etienne. “The examinations carried out last night confirm that Neymar Jr is suffering from a sprained left ankle with ligament damage,” PSG said in a statement, adding that a further update would be made in 72 hours. Neymar had started 13 of the past 15 games for PSG this season after an injury-plagued four years in France, but he faces another lengthy absence after landing awkwardly following a challenge by Saint-Etienne’s Yvann Macon.  The 29-year-old posted a video Monday of himself wearing a pressotherapy boot on his left leg. “These runs of bad luck are part of an athlete’s life,” he said Sunday on Instagram. “That’s the way it is now, you have to pick yourself back up and move forward. I’ll be back better and stronger.” Neymar should return in time for the last 16 of the Champions League in mid-February. PSG are guaranteed to advance as runners-up of Group A behind Manchester City. Mauricio Pochettino’s side sit 12 points clear of Rennes in Ligue 1 with 13 wins from 15 matches. Brazil have already qualified for next year’s World Cup in Qatar, meaning he is unlikely to be rushed back for games against Ecuador and Paraguay on January 27 and February 1. PSG also announced that Marco Verratti has resumed training ahead of Wednesday’s match at home to third-placed Nice. The Italy midfielder has missed the past two games with a thigh problem.

Dedicated Vardy ‘not stopping soon’ says Leicester boss Rodgers London (AFP) – Brendan Rodgers says Leicester star Jamie Vardy shows no sign of slowing down, outlining the personal investment the veteran striker has made to prolong his career. Vardy, 34, took his Premier League tally for the season to nine with two goals in the Foxes’ 4-2 home win against Watford on Sunday. The former England international, who did not play in the top flight until he was 27, has scored 93 of his 127 Premier League goals since his 30th birthday — drawing him level with former Arsenal forward Ian Wright. “To enter into football when he has and to see the numbers that he has is absolutely remarkable,” Leicester manager Rodgers said ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Southampton. “There’s no sign that it’s stopping soon either because he is looking after himself. “It’s all him. He clearly has the talent, he has the will. All we’ve tried to do is just manage him to maximise what we can get out of him.” Vardy has a cryotherapy chamber (in which players are exposed to extreme low temperatures) at home as well as other equipment to aid his post-match recovery. Rodgers has managed Vardy’s game-time this season by limiting his minutes in the Europa League. “He’s a brilliant professional and he’s trying to ensure his career goes on for as long as it can possibly can,” said the Leicester boss, whose side are 10th in the Premier League. “He has everything here to help with his recovery and recuperation after games. He has also invested a lot of money into some of these items he has at home to help him recover as well.”

Manchester United appoint Ralf Rangnick as interim boss London (AFP) – Manchester United announced on Monday they had appointed Ralf Rangnick as interim manager until the end of the season following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after a disastrous run of results. The 63-year-old will arrive at Old Trafford from Russian side Lokomotiv Moscow, where he was manager of sports and development, becoming just the sixth German manager to coach in the Premier League. At the end of the season Rangnick, whose appointment is subject to work visa requirements, will take on a consultancy role at the 20-times English champions for a further two years. He will take over from first-team coach Michael Carrick, who has been in caretaker charge for two games since Solskjaer was dismissed just over a week ago following a humiliating 4-1 defeat at lowly Watford. “He was our number one candidate for interim manager, reflecting the invaluable leadership and technical skills he will bring from almost four decades of experience in management and coaching,” said United football director John Murtough. The former RB Leipzig boss said he was excited to be joining United and focused on turning around the fortunes of the club, who are floundering in eighth spot in the Premier League, five points off the top four. “The squad is full of talent and has a great balance of youth and experience,” he said. “All my efforts for the next six months will be on helping these players fulfil their potential, both individually and, most importantly, as a team. “Beyond that, I look forward to supporting the club’s longer-term goals on a consultancy basis.” Rangnick could take charge for the first time against Arsenal on Thursday if his work permit issues are sorted out quickly. Carrick — who has overseen a Champions League win over Villarreal and a 1-1 draw on Sunday at Stamford Bridge, where he dropped Cristiano Ronaldo — will remain in caretaker charge until Rangnick’s work visa is finalised. Former United captain Gary Neville tweeted: “Welcome to the Greatest Football Club in the World Ralf Rangnick.” – Solskjaer sacking – Club bosses ran out of patience with Solskjaer despite keeping faith with the Norwegian after humiliating home defeats to rivals Liverpool and Manchester City. The former striker, who scored the winning goal for United in the 1999 Champions League final to complete a historic treble, was in charge at Old Trafford for nearly three years. Under his leadership United finished in the Premier League top four in back-to-back seasons for the first time since Alex Ferguson retired as boss in 2013 but they have not won silverware since 2017. The American-owned club can boast abundant riches in attack, with Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Greenwood and Anthony Martial all vying for starting spots. But their leaky defence has already conceded 22 goals in 13 games, more than four times Chelsea’s total of five and they are well off the pace set this season by Chelsea, Liverpool and City. Rangnick has managed a number of clubs in Germany including Stuttgart, Schalke, Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig and has also operated as director of football at RB Leipzig and RB Salzburg. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel have both spoken highly of their compatriot, who won the German Cup with Schalke in 2011. During the same season, he led Schalke to the semi-finals of the Champions League, where they lost 6-1 on aggregate to United, who were then beaten by Barcelona in the final. Rangnick is renowned for his emphasis on “gegenpressing”, a high-pressing style of football in which hard work and zonal pressing means the ball is won high in the opposition’s half in attacking areas. Klopp said last week, before the appointment was confirmed, that the veteran manager’s appointment was “not good news for other teams” due to his impressive track record.

African players in Europe: Three-goal Bebou steals show Paris (AFP) – Togo international Ihlas Bebou scored a hat-trick for fifth-placed Hoffenheim at the weekend in a 6-3 Bundesliga triumph at bottom club Greuther Fuerth.  It was the first German league treble for the 27-year-old winger, who had spells with Fortuna Dusseldorf and Hannover before joining his current club in 2019 on a three-year contract. Egyptian Mohamed Salah, often the African star of the weekend, had to settle for an assist as Premier League title contenders Liverpool whipped Southampton 4-0 at Anfield. Here, AFP Sport highlights Africans who starred in the major European leagues at the weekend. ENGLAND MOHAMED SALAH (Liverpool) Salah was not on the scoresheet for Liverpool in their 4-0 rout of Southampton but provided a brilliant cross for fellow forward Diogo Jota’s second goal. The Egyptian’s scoring rate has slowed in recent weeks after a sensational start to the season but the 29-year-old has still racked up 17 goals for the club since August. EMMANUEL DENNIS (Watford) Nigeria forward Dennis is making waves despite the struggles of his Watford side, who are languishing in 16th spot in the Premier League after a 4-2 defeat at snowy Leicester. The 24-year-old scored the second goal at the King Power Stadium and became only the sixth player in Premier League history to reach both five goals and five assists in 12 or fewer games SPAIN  SAMUEL CHUKWUEZE (Villarreal) The Nigerian striker’s goal against Barcelona was not enough to prevent Villarreal losing 3-1 at home to Barcelona in La Liga. Villarreal looked likely to take a point after Chukwueze nipped in ahead of Oscar Mingueza and poked into the corner in the 76th minute for his second goal of the season. But Barca hit back twice late on through Memphis Depay and a Philippe Coutinho penalty to claim victory. ITALY KALIDOU KOULIBALY (Napoli) Senegal captain Koulibaly played a key role in Napoli’s 4-0 crushing of Lazio, patrolling the backline and taking part in some incredible spells of possession as Luciano Spalletti’s side moved three points clear at the top of Serie A. It was the perfect performance on the night in which Naples paid tribute to its adopted son Diego Maradona. GERMANY IHLAS BEBOU (Hoffenheim) Bebou cancelled Jamie Leweling’s opener for bottom club Fuerth, and added a second as Hoffenheim took control of the game in the second half. He completed his hat-trick through an elegant chipped finish with 10 minutes remaining. TAIWO AWONIYI (Union Berlin) Nigeria striker Awoniyi helped his side to a second-half equaliser before an agonising injury-time goal saw them stumble to a 2-1 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt. Awoniyi was fouled by Evan N’Dicka on the hour mark, allowing Max Kruse to score from the spot and cancel out Djibril Sow’s first-half opener. But N’Dicka had the last laugh, heading the winner seconds before the final whistle. ELLYES SKHIRI (Cologne) Tunisia midfielder Skhiri made his first Bundesliga start in almost two months as his side cruised to a 4-1 derby win over Borussia Moenchengladbach. Having missed four games in a row with a knee injury, Skhiri made a cameo appearance in last week’s draw with Mainz before returning to the starting eleven against Gladbach. FRANCE GHISLAIN KONAN (Reims) The Ivorian produced a wonder strike in stoppage time to give Reims a 1-0 win at home to Clermont. The left-back unleashed a thunderous drive from 20 metres into the top corner for his first goal of the season to push his team clear of the relegation places. GAEL KAKUTA (Lens) The Democratic Republic of Congo international notched his second goal of the campaign in a 2-2 draw with Angers. Kakuta, who scored a career-best 11 times in Ligue 1 last term, fired in a cross from Mali defender Massadio Haidara just after half-time to cancel out the opener from Morocco’s Sofiane Boufal.

Howe refuses to make promises over Newcastle transfer spending London (AFP) – Eddie Howe says it would be “foolish” for him to promise that bottom side Newcastle will buy their way out of Premier League relegation trouble in the January transfer window. The new boss celebrated his 44th birthday on Monday by preparing his team for Tuesday’s clash with Norwich, with the club still seeking their first win of the season after 13 matches. Newcastle, who lost 2-0 at Arsenal on Saturday, are six points adrift of safety at the foot of the table but they have vital home matches against the Canaries and Burnley — the two clubs directly above them — over the coming week. The Magpies’ new Saudi-backed owners have indicated they will invest significantly in the squad but Howe knows he cannot rely on spending power alone to preserve their top-flight status. Asked if he had been assured of backing in the transfer window, he replied: “I can’t make any promises on that, but I can promise that the people above me, the owners, will support the team and support me in trying to achieve what we need. That’s all I can say at this time. “It would be foolish of me to make rash promises or statements. My priority at the moment is to get the best out of the players we have.” Howe has seen signs of improvement in his team in the two games since he replaced Steve Bruce but knows defensive frailties need to be eradicated if they are to drag themselves out of trouble. “I don’t think there are any limitations on what we can achieve with the group of players we have here,” he said. “We have to improve performances, improve results and once confidence returns to the team, I think you will see a different team. “But attacking and defending is always a delicate balance for any team and we just need to get that right.” Howe, who will be without suspended defenders Jamaal Lascelles, his captain, and Matt Ritchie, will be in the dugout at St James’ Park for the first time after missing the last home game following a positive coronavirus test.

Klopp’s mentor Rangnick brings studious approach to Man Utd London (AFP) – Manchester United’s new interim manager Ralf Rangnick once mentored Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel and now “The Professor” will use his studious approach to revive his troubled Premier League club. United hired Rangnick on Monday after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked last week following a humiliating 4-1 defeat at Watford that featured the kind of confusion and lethargy that are anathema to the German. Solskjaer’s failed reign was defined by an acute lack of coherent game-planning. But Rangnick’s role in championing the “gegenpressing” (counter-pressing) philosophy popularised by Liverpool boss Klopp suggests United are about to be dragged into the 21st century. United lured Rangnick from his role as Lokomotiv Moscow’s head of sports and development after learning Paris Saint-Germain were not willing to part with Mauricio Pochettino at present. That could turn out to be a blessing in disguise if the 63-year-old can emulate the success enjoyed by his devoted pupils at Liverpool and Chelsea. Klopp used Rangnick’s tactics to become a Premier League and European champion at Liverpool, while Chelsea boss Tuchel is an ardent admirer after United’s new manager gave him his first coaching job at Stuttgart. Rangnick rejected an interim offer from Chelsea in January, paving the way for Tuchel to win the Champions League in his first season with the Blues. Klopp and Tuchel swear by the intense scheme Rangnick first adopted after watching Valeriy Lobanovskyi’s Dynamo Kiev in the 1980s. “That was my football epiphany. I understood that there was a different way of playing,” Rangnick said. The German’s obsession with his players’ reaction times in training is fuelled by his desire to deploy high-tempo pressing tactics during matches. When Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund suffered an eye-opening 4-1 defeat against Rangnick’s Hoffenheim in 2008, he immediately learned lessons from his counterpart’s style. In an interview with the Coaches’ Voice website, Rangnick said: “Our idea is clear: it’s very similar to my almost-coaching friend Jurgen Klopp. Our football is very heavy metal, rock and roll and it’s not slow balls.” Reacting to Rangnick’s appointment, Klopp said it was not good news for United’s rivals. “Ralf is obviously a really experienced manager,” he said. “Unfortunately a good coach is coming to England.” – ‘Trust and empathy’ – It will be fascinating to see if Rangnick can persuade Cristiano Ronaldo to carry out his demands after the striker’s apparent unwillingness to get his hands dirty this season. Ronaldo is not the only United star who might benefit from Rangnick’s arrival, with their often shambolic defending one area his rigorous approach could clearly improve. Rangnick was one of the first coaches to hire video analysts and sports psychologists and while he once had a no-nonsense style, he has changed with the times. “Modern-day leadership is about being persuasive and creating a motivational basis so every day the players will want to come in and get better,” he said. “This is about trust and empathy and human relationships.” Lutz Pfannenstiel, who worked with Rangnick at Hoffenheim, believes his methodology is ideally suited to lifting United out of their malaise. “We like to call him in Germany, the football professor. Everything he does is very well thought-out, the way he puts structures in place at every club is something amazing,” Pfannenstiel told the BBC. A self-confessed Anglophile, Rangnick studied English and physical education at the University of Sussex in the 1970s. He also played non-league football for Southwick during that spell in England and once worked as an intern at Arsenal. Rangnick built his coaching resume in Germany with spells at Stuttgart, Hannover, Hoffenheim, Schalke and RB Leipzig, where he was last in the dug-out in 2019. Rangnick has only won one major trophy, the 2011 German Cup with Schalke.  But he did take Schalke to the Champions League semi-finals in 2011, losing to Alex Ferguson’s United, and led Hoffenheim to the Bundesliga with successive promotions. After his six-month interim regime, Rangnick has agreed to take on a consultancy role at Old Trafford for two further years. By the time he steps away, United hope Rangnick’s lessons will have raised the bar at a club that have fallen a long way since their glory days under Ferguson.

Hertha Berlin sack Dardai, bring in Korkut Berlin (AFP) – Hertha Berlin, currently sitting 14th in the Bundesliga, sacked Pal Dardai as coach on Monday, replacing the Hungarian with former Turkey international Tayfun Korkut. Hertha’s 1-1 home draw against Augsburg on Saturday saw the team stretch to four their winless streak, which included a 2-0 capital derby defeat by Union. German-born ex-midfielder Korkut, 47, signed a contract until the end of the season, not having graced the dug-out in the three years since he was dismissed as coach of Stuttgart.

Rangnick influence shows as Man Utd make a point London (AFP) – Michael Carrick was adamant Ralf Rangnick had no role in Manchester United’s gameplan for their 1-1 draw at Chelsea, but the club’s impending interim manager would have taken heart from the way they frustrated the Premier League leaders. Rangnick, currently working as Lokomotiv Moscow’s director of sports and development, is expected to be installed this week as United boss until the end of the season. The German has been in talks with United since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked, leaving Carrick to take the reins for the Champions League win against Villarreal and Sunday’s gritty performance at Stamford Bridge. Former United defender Gary Neville said Carrick’s decision to drop Cristiano Ronaldo and pick a defensive 4-3-3 formation with no recognised striker against Chelsea was a sign that Rangnick was already having an influenced. “I’ve a feeling the incoming manager has picked that team as it’s a huge departure from midweek,” Neville tweeted. There were also suggestions United technical director Darren Fletcher was sitting on the bench with an earpiece that may have been linked up to Rangnick. Carrick refuted Neville’s claim, saying: “No, that’s not the case.”  Asked if he knew when Rangnick would arrived, Carrick added: “As of now I haven’t got any more news for you really. “I was purely focused on the game, so there was enough in my head to prepare the boys for this. “I’m sure I’ll be updated and aware and see what happens in the next few days.” Regardless of Rangnick’s role in United’s defiant draw, the 63-year-old will surely arrive at Old Trafford encouraged by the way they held firm against in-form Chelsea. – ‘We nearly pulled it off’ – Beaten in five of their prior seven league games and languishing 12 points behind Chelsea, it would have no surprise if United had rolled over in the same manner they were thrashed 4-1 at Watford in Solskjaer’s last match. But United held off the Blues using the kind of workaholic approach which is mandatory in Rangnick’s ‘gegenpressing’ scheme. Bruno Fernandes, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford worked hard to deny Chelsea midfielders Jorginho and Ruben Loftus-Cheek the time to start their team’s attacks. “I thought the front three did a tremendous job, a really disciplined job. They picked the right moments to go and press, that set the foundation for the players behind them,” Carrick said. While United sat far too deep for long periods, their strategy almost paid off after Jorginho’s poor control on the halfway line allowed Sancho to run clear to open the scoring in the 50th minute. Jorginho made amends for his blunder when he converted Chelsea’s equaliser from the penalty spot after Aaron Wan-Bissaka fouled Thiago Silva in the 69th minute. “We came here with a plan, and we kind of knew how Chelsea would play,” Carrick said. “So that plan was all about stopping the little passes threaded through to Jorginho and Ruben Loftus-Cheek in the middle of the pitch. We were conscious of that. “It’s just what we decided to go with today and we nearly pulled it off.” When Rangnick does finally take charge, he will have to solve the Ronaldo dilemma after the Portugal striker stormed straight down the tunnel at full-time. Carrick insisted Ronaldo had no complaints about only coming on for the final 27 minutes. But the superstar, who has scored 10 times since signing from Juventus in August, has never taken kindly to being denied the spotlight. How he fits into Rangnick’s desire for a high-tempo philosophy remains to be seen. At least Sancho is finding his feet with goals in successive games after failing to score in his first 14 appearances following his move from Borussia Dortmund. “It’s part of football. You have got to do both sides of the game. We have talked about you have to earn your own luck,” Carrick said of Sancho.
