Nielsen goal hands Fuerth historic home win over Union Berlin (AFP) – Bundesliga bottom side Greuther Fuerth celebrated their first ever home top-flight win on Sunday as a second-half goal from Norwegian striker Havard Nielsen gave them victory over Union Berlin 1-0.  Fuerth, who were promoted to the Bundesliga for only the second time in their history earlier this year, were playing their 23rd top-flight home game.  Yet Nielsen’s poacher’s finish and a spirited defensive performance saw them finally break their duck against a wasteful Union side.  With games in Bavaria being played behind closed doors due to Covid-19, Fuerth were denied the chance to celebrate with their fans.  They remain 12 points adrift of safety at the bottom of the table, while high-flying Union missed the chance to leapfrog Freiburg into fifth. Dickson Abiama had an early chance to give the hosts the lead but fired the ball straight at Union keeper Andreas Luthe from close range. At the other end, Luthe’s opposite number Sascha Burchert frustrated Union several times in the first half before Fuerth took the lead after the break. Nielsen prodded in a deflected finish after a poorly-cleared corner. The visitors threw everything forward in the last half-hour, but were wasteful in front of goal as they stumbled to only a fourth defeat of the season.

Nice win battle of French Champions League hopefuls Paris (AFP) – Kasper Dolberg scored one goal and set up another as Nice won 2-1 away at Rennes on Sunday in a clash between two Ligue 1 clubs with Champions League ambitions. Rennes, who are owned by one of France’s richest men, Francois Pinault, are looking to return to the Champions League after appearing in the group stage for the first time last season. They came into the weekend in second place, four points clear of Nice, themselves owned by Ineos, the petrochemicals group chaired by British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe. Nice, managed by Christophe Galtier, the man who led Lille to last season’s title, started the campaign strongly before stumbling in recent weeks but they went ahead in Brittany when Dolberg converted a 19th-minute penalty awarded for a foul on Dante. Danish international striker Dolberg then teed up Youcef Atal to score the second in the 51st minute with a superb effort from a tight angle. Benjamin Bourigeaud soon pulled one back for Rennes but Nice held on to close to within a point of Rennes in the table. The defeat for Rennes means runaway leaders Paris Saint-Germain, currently 11 points clear, can go even further ahead with a win at home to Monaco later on Sunday. Meanwhile, Marseille have the chance to retake second place by beating Strasbourg away in Sunday’s other late match. Earlier, reigning champions Lille, fresh from qualifying for the last 16 of the Champions League, were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Lyon, a result which leaves the two clubs still adrift in mid-table. Lyon last week had a point deducted as a punishment for the trouble that led to November’s game against Marseille being abandoned after Dimitri Payet was hit on the head by a bottle. Also on Sunday, there were wins for struggling trio Bordeaux, Clermont and Metz. Metz hammered Lorient 4-1 to climb above their opponents and out of the bottom two. Saint-Etienne, who sacked manager Claude Puel last weekend, remain rooted to the foot of the table after losing 2-0 at Reims on Saturday.

Atalanta two points from Serie A summit with Verona win Verona (Italy) (AFP) – Atalanta closed in on Serie A leaders AC Milan after coming from behind to win 2-1 at Verona on Sunday and move to within two points of top spot. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side sit third in Italy’s top flight thanks to goals in either half from Aleksey Miranchuk and Teun Koopmeiners which ensured they took advantage of Milan drawing at Udinese on Saturday. They are level on 37 points with second-placed Inter Milan, who will finish the weekend in first place if they beat Cagliari in Sunday’s late match, after moving above Napoli ahead of their home clash with Empoli in the early evening. Defeat for Verona was their first at home since Igor Tudor took charge in mid-September and leaves them 11th on 23 points, one ahead of Torino who beat Bologna 2-1 in Sunday’s early match. Giovanni Simeone gave the hosts a 22nd-minute lead with his 13th goal of a superb season for the Argentine, forcing a shot past Juan Musso from a narrow angle. However with eight minutes until the break and after Mario Pasalic had thwacked the post, Miranchuk levelled by dancing into a shooting position and rolling come a calm finish. And Atalanta were ahead just after the hour mark through Koopmeiners, who was lucky to see his distance effort take a massive deflection off Adrien Tameze and fly past a stranded Lorenzo Montipo in the Verona goal. The hard-fought win will be a boost for Atalanta after they missed out on the last 16 of the Champions League following Thursday’s home defeat at the hands of Villarreal. They will be in Monday’s draw for the Europa League play-off round after finishing third in Group F behind La Liga outfit Villarreal and Manchester United.

Leicester thrash sorry Newcastle, West Ham held by Burnley London (AFP) – Leicester left Newcastle still rooted in the Premier League relegation zone with a 4-0 thrashing of the Magpies on Sunday, while West Ham’s Champions League ambitions were dented by a 0-0 draw at Burnley. Despite being hit by a coronavirus outbreak that left Brendan Rodgers without seven players, the Foxes gave Eddie Howe another reminder of the task he faces to keep Newcastle in the top flight as Youri Tielemans struck twice at the King Power. Howe will be able to call on the resources of the Saudi sovereign wealth fund in the January transfer window and results elsewhere this weekend mean they remain just three points adrift of safety. But Newcastle face Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United in their next three games and, on this form, will be lucky to escape that run without another severe hit to their goal difference. Leicester had won just two of their previous nine games in all competitions and were dumped out of the Europa League by Napoli on Thursday. However, they got the break they needed to edge in front before half-time when James Maddison engineered contact with Javier Manquillo to win a penalty. With Jamie Vardy watching on from the bench, Tielemans took responsibility from the spot to open the scoring seven minutes before half-time. Patson Daka’s form has seen him earn his spot ahead of Vardy in recent weeks in the Premier League and Zambian had the easiest of tasks to roll in his seventh goal of the season from Harvey Barnes’ unselfish pass to double Leicester’s lead. Tielemans rounded off a fine team move for his second of the afternoon before Maddison’s fine finish compounded Newcastle’s pain five minutes from time. Victory lifts Leicester to eighth and back in the fight for a place in the top four while West Ham wasted the chance to extend their advantage over the chasing pack. The Hammers have won just one of their last five league games as Nick Pope frustrated David Moyes’ men with a string of saves at Turf Moor. West Ham edged one point ahead of fifth-placed Manchester United, but Tottenham, who are not in action this weekend due to their own Covid outbreak, are just two points back with two games in hand. A point also does little to aid Burnley’s hopes of survival as they remain in 18th, but are now just two points adrift of safety.

Rangers brush aside title rivals Hearts Glasgow (AFP) – Alfredo Morelos and Joe Aribo fired Rangers to a 2-0 win at Hearts on Sunday as the Scottish Premiership leaders extended their strong start under new boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst. Van Bronckhorst has won four successive league games since replacing Steven Gerrard after his predecessor’s move to Aston Villa. Morelos and Aribo scored in the early stages at Tynecastle, giving Rangers six consecutive league victories encompassing the end of Gerrard’s reign. Hearts had Josh Ginnelly sent off late on as they squandered a chance to close the gap on the champions. Rangers are 12 points clear of third placed Hearts and seven ahead of second placed Celtic, who host Motherwell later on Sunday. Van Bronckhorst made six changes to the Rangers side that began Thursday’s 1-1 draw at Lyon in the Europa League. Liam Boyce had a great chance to open the scoring for Hearts in the third minute when he ran on to John Souttar’s clipped ball over the top, but the Northern Ireland striker saw his lob tipped over by Allan McGregor. It was Rangers who scored with their first chance of the match after nine minutes when Ryan Kent’s cross reached Fashion Sakala and the Zambian cut the ball back to Morelos, who fired home from six yards out. Sakala shot just wide from close range moments later before Morelos headed wide from James Tavernier’s corner. Rangers’ second goal came in the 13th minute when Aribo ran on to a brilliant long diagonal from Connor Goldson and fired an angled low shot beyond the exposed Craig Gordon. Gary Mackay-Steven saw his angled shot pushed behind by McGregor early in the second half. Rangers had a let-off in the 53rd minute when Calvin Bassey knocked a Ginnelly cross off the underside of his own crossbar. Rangers remained a threat, however, and Scott Arfield and Sakala were both denied by saves from Gordon. Boyce fired over from close range after being set up by Mackay-Steven before Stephen Kingsley cracked a free kick off the bar from 30 yards out. In the 80th minute, Ginnelly was sent off after being shown a second yellow card for squaring up to Borna Barisic.

De Gea reveals fears over Lindelof’s breathing scare London (AFP) – Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea said Victor Lindelof’s breathing scare during the 1-0 win over Norwich provoked unsettling memories of incidents involving Christian Eriksen and Sergio Aguero. Lindelof had to be replaced in the second half at Carrow Road on Saturday after the United defender received treatment on the pitch when he suddenly clutched his chest. United interim manager Ralf Rangnick revealed the Swedish international centre-back was fine after the match, but De Gea conceded seeing his team-mate having difficulties reminded him of Eriksen’s shocking cardiac arrest while playing for Denmark in the European championships in June. Like Eriksen, Barcelona striker Aguero is also currently sidelined after collapsing with heart issues in October. “As soon as it was like difficult breathing and feeling strange, the game doesn’t matter or football. First of all is life,” De Gea told Sky Sports. “We saw some players who are feeling a bit, I don’t know what was going on, but Victor was feeling his breathing. “We saw already Eriksen, Aguero… so it is sometimes a bit difficult to see your player acting like this so it was better to change. I hope he is completely fine.” Despite the anxiety over Lindelof’s health, Rangnick raised the prospect of the 27-year-old being fit to face Brentford on Tuesday. “Victor can’t even remember himself how it happened. I think he had a collision with another player and had problems to breathe,” Lindelof said. “For more than 10 mins his heart rate was higher than normal and he was a little shocked by this, so we had to replace him. “The doctor has checked him after the match and it seems everything is OK now, but we still have to see how he is doing tomorrow. Hopefully he will fit for the Brentford game.”

Vlahovic strikes twice as Fiorentina sink Salernitana Milan (AFP) – Dusan Vlahovic added two more goals to his rapidly growing tally for Fiorentina in Saturday’s 4-0 Serie A win over Salernitana which continues a encouraging season for the Tuscans. Serbia forward Vlahovic lashed home the Viola’s second five minutes after half-time and tapped home Riccardo Sottil’s low cross six minutes from the end to make it 15 league goals for the season and move top of the goalscoring charts in Italy. Giacomo Bonaventura opened with a well-struck volley in the 31st minute while Youssef Maleh netted following a saved Vlahovic shot in the final minute as Fiorentina move up to fifth on 30 points, three ahead of sixth-placed Juventus who are at Venezia in Saturday’s early evening match. Vincenzo Italiano’s side are also four points from Atalanta in the final Champions League spot ahead of their trip to Verona on Sunday. Vlahovic, 21, has now scored 32 Serie A goals in 2021 and is leading Fiorentina to what looks to be their best season in years. With 10 wins so far this campaign Fiorentina have already beaten last year’s tally and are aiming to qualify for Europe for the first time since 2016. He had been targeted with insults by supporters earlier in the season after refusing to sign an extension to his current contract which expires in the summer of 2023. However his form — seven goals in his last five matches — has brought the crowd in Florence back on his side. Salernitana’s sixth defeat in their last seven matches leaves them rooted to the bottom of the league on eight points from their 17 matches.

Eto’o elected head of the Cameroon Football Federation Yaoundé (AFP) – Samuel Eto’o said on Saturday his election as president of the Cameroon Football Federation, announced earlier in the day, was “one of the proudest moments” of his life.  The four-time African player of the year gained 43 votes to beat acting president Seidou Mbombo Njoya, who collected 31. “I’m deeply grateful to be elected as the new president,” the former star striker said on Twitter.  “Every vote represents the energy and ambition of our football family to take our beloved sport to a level we’ve never seen before,” Eto’o added. After the result was announced at Hotel Mont Febe in Yaounde, Eto’o’s supporters exulted The vote was held because the Court of Arbitration for Sport in January annulled Njoya’s victory in a 2018 election. When filing his candidacy on November 17, Eto’o, a four-time African footballer of the year, said: “I will be the next president of the federation despite all the cheating.” Eto’o had said Njoya, who he supported in 2018, had “failed miserably”. Eto’o received the support of three other candidates who withdrew in the days before the vote, as well as another Indomitable Lions legend Roger Milla and former Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi. Eto’s campaign focused on promoting women’s football and eliminating corruption in the Cameroonian game. Eto’o, 40, made 118 appearances for Cameroon scoring 56 times.  He won the African Cup of Nations in 2000 and 2002 as well as Olympic gold in 2000, on each occasion in a penalty shootout. He scored in both the 2000 finals. He won the Champions League with Barcelona and Inter Milan and had spells at Real Madrid and Chelsea.  He will quickly face his first challenge when Cameroon hosts the African Cup of Nations in January, a tournament delayed a year by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sterling bags 100th Premier League goal as Man City beat Wolves Manchester (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Raheem Sterling scored his 100th Premier League goal as the Manchester City forward’s penalty fired the leaders to a 1-0 win against 10-man Wolves on Saturday. Sterling netted from the spot in the second half at the Etihad Stadium to clinch City’s sixth successive league victory. City’s cause was aided by a needless first half red card for Wolves striker Raul Jimenez, who was dismissed for failing to retreat the required 10 yards before a free-kick he had been booked for conceding seconds earlier. Sterling’s landmark goal ensured City capitalised on Jimenez’s blunder as they survived an average display to get back on track after the midweek Champions League defeat at Leipzig. After struggling to get into Guardiola’s starting line-up at times this season amid talk of a potential transfer, Sterling is finally showing signs of recapturing the scintillating form that made him such a dangerous force. Pep Guardiola’s side are four points clear of second placed Liverpool, who can close the gap if they beat Aston Villa at Anfield later on Saturday. Kyle Walker was dropped to the bench after City’s right-back was criticised by Guardiola following his red card at Leipzig. Guardiola made eight changes from the Leipzig game, with Phil Foden, troubled by an ankle problem, and Kevin De Bruyne, recovered from the coronavirus, named as substitutes. Bernardo Silva had scored six goals in his previous eight league appearances and the City playmaker was inches away from adding to that total when he bent a curler just over the bar in the opening minutes. Joao Cancelo’s lung-bursting breaks from right-back were a constant threat in the first half and he advanced again for a low strike that tested Wolves keeper Jose Sa. – Sterling strikes – Wolves duo Max Kilman and Ruben Neves needed lengthy treatment after a nasty clash of heads that left Kilman with blood pouring from a cut. Jimenez, the victim of a fractured skull in a collision with David Luiz at Arsenal last season, was quick to check on his team-mates, who were both able to continue playing. It was Jimenez who didn’t make it to half-time as the Mexican saw red in needless fashion. Booked for a tug on Rodri, Jimenez stupidly stuck out a foot to block the resulting free-kick without retreating 10 yards, earning his second yellow card 48 seconds after the first. Jimenez ripped off his protective headband and swung it around in frustration, but he could have no complaints about his self-inflicted exit. With the numerical advantage, City monopolised possession after the interval. Ilkay Gundogan met Cancelo’s pin-point cross with a looping header that Conor Coady nodded off the line. Silva and Sterling got in each others way as they failed to finish off Oleksandr Zinchenko’s cross. City’s pressure finally produced a goal in the 66th minute. Joao Moutinho blocked Silva’s cross with a raised arm and, although the ball appeared to hit the midfielder’s armpit, VAR confirmed Jon Moss’s decision after a check. Sterling stroked the spot-kick down the middle for his fifth goal in his last eight City appearances. Jack Grealish poked wide from close range and Jesus was denied by Sa in the closing stages. City had done just enough but Ederson had to tip over Kilman’s header before the points were secured.

Manchester (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Raheem Sterling scored his 100th Premier League goal as the Manchester City forward’s penalty fired the leaders to a 1-0 win against 10-man Wolves on Saturday. Arteta seeks clarity over Covid rules as Premier League goes on alert London (AFP) – Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has called for clarity over Covid-19 postponement rules after Premier League sides were told to return to emergency protocols to limit the spread of the virus. Tottenham’s Europa League Conference game with Rennes on Thursday was postponed after Spurs reported that eight players and five members of staff had tested positive. Sunday’s match between Brighton and Tottenham is also off as fears rise over the potential impact of the surging Omicron variant on the English top flight. Yet Arsenal’s Premier League match at Brentford on the opening weekend of the season, which they lost 2-0, went ahead despite four of Arteta’s squad testing positive.  Asked if he wanted league chiefs to set a threshold for the number of cases that would trigger a postponement, Arteta said on Friday: “I’m saying that would be really helpful, yes.” “I think it is because you don’t know when you have to play and when you don’t and we have some examples about that,” he added on the eve of Arsenal’s home game against Southampton. “The decision has to be made first of all to protect the players and the environment, this is the first thing. Afterwards obviously we need to maintain certain criteria so all the clubs are competing and we can all compete in the same conditions.” – Emergency measures – The Premier League has written to its 20 clubs returning training ground protocols to “emergency measures”. It followed an announcement this week by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson that the government was tightening virus restrictions in England. The UK as a whole has had more than 10 million confirmed cases of coronavirus and over 146,000 people have died from the virus, one of the highest tolls in Europe. Norwich manager Dean Smith, whose side lost 3-0 to Tottenham last week, faces a nervous wait to find out if any of his players will be ruled out of Saturday’s Manchester United clash because of a positive test result. “We have got a couple of knocks and have got a couple of Covid-related issues that we are waiting on results for this morning,” Smith said. “(They are) just feeling a little bit unwell, not likely to be linked to the game last week with Tottenham. It is just in general, I think (like) with the whole nation, (we are) holding our breath at the moment.” Rules had been relaxed at Premier League clubs with high vaccination rates, allowing players to remove masks indoors and use their original dressing room, but they are now returning to the emergency measures. “We will try to be as cautious and careful as possible and do all the things,” said Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. “It might be an extra test per week. With Champions League games we get tests twice a week anyway — now we’ll probably get tested three times a week, which I’m completely fine with.” Clubs have also been advised to limit social interactions, meaning Christmas parties are likely to be off the table. Manchester City’s training ground was shut down by an outbreak of cases just under a year ago. City manager Pep Guardiola said his players were still on “alert” to prevent a similar outbreak at the busiest time of the year for Premier League clubs, with six rounds of fixtures scheduled to take place between this weekend and January 3. “The concern is always here — the variant or the pandemic is still in society,” he said. “We follow the protocols. Everyone is alert. What happened with other clubs can happen here, absolutely. Wear masks, social distance, be careful.”

Back to the action, Sunday had four games scheduled, but that will not be the case. The ongoing COVID-19 issues at Tottenham forced the club to reschedule its fixture against Brighton and Hove Albion. Tottenham already missed an EPL and Europa Conference League game with COVID issues. Now, there are just three games, highlighted by Crystal Palace hosting Everton and West Ham traveling to Burnley. Jorginho to play through pain for Chelsea: Tuchel London (AFP) – Thomas Tuchel says Chelsea midfielder Jorginho will ignore the pain of his back injury to play in Saturday’s Premier League clash against Leeds. Jorginho missed Chelsea’s Champions League draw at Zenit Saint Petersburg on Wednesday because of the ongoing back problem. But, with Chelsea ravaged by injuries in midfield, Blues boss Tuchel revealed the Italy star is willing to put his body on the line when Leeds visit Stamford Bridge. N’Golo Kante has been ruled out again with a knee injury and Mateo Kovacic is isolating after testing positive for the coronavirus, while Trevoh Chalobah is also sidelined. “Jorginho completed the last two training sessions. I think he will do again what he did in the last few games he has played — play through the pain and do what’s needed to be on the pitch,” Tuchel told reporters on Friday. Reece James, in superb form at right wing-back, deputised in central midfield against Zenit, while struggling Spanish midfielder Saul Niguez moved to left wing-back. It was an experiment that failed to convince as Chelsea conceded a late equaliser in a 3-3 draw that denied them a first place finish in the group. Jorginho’s availability will allow James to return to his usual position and Tuchel said: “Reece will start as a wing-back, and we will find other formations elsewhere. “We wanted to see Reece there in real life and to try Saul in a new position as well. But there’s no need tomorrow to try these things.” Chelsea have won just three of their last seven matches in all competitions, with last weekend’s 3-2 defeat at West Ham ending their spell on top of the Premier League. Tuchel admitted Chelsea cannot ignore their recent stumble as he called on his players to focus on getting the smallest details right. “Let’s be honest, if you have the lead four times in two matches and you escape with one point and six goals conceded, it’s not the moment to look away and pretend nothing is happening,” Tuchel said. “It is happening, and I think it’s still a matter of details, still a matter of small things, and not to worry about the big picture. “There are reasons for it, of course, we played in Zenit without any central midfielders who are used to playing there.” Third placed Chelsea are two points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City, but Tuchel is hopeful they have learned from the recent blip. “The performances are not horrible. They are in some moments average, and average looks kind of horrible when you play and work for Chelsea,” he said. “This is very unusual for us and this should not become common. We’ve learned now, hopefully, twice from experience, and we have the chance to prove it now tomorrow.”

Germany boss Flick puts pressure on veteran Hummels Berlin (AFP) – A year before the World Cup finals, Germany head coach Hansi Flick has warned veteran centre-back Mats Hummels he is in danger of missing out on a place in the squad for Qatar 2022. Hummels has had “an excellent, very successful past in the national team”, Flick told broadcaster RTL, “but at the moment — he knows himself — he doesn’t have that level, that quality in his game.” Flick says Hummels has “one or two problems” to fix with the centre-back at the heart of a Dortmund defence which has struggled for consistency this season. As a key member of the team which won the 2014 World Cup, the 32-year-old Hummels last played for Germany in a 2-0 defeat to England in the last 16 of Euro 2020 in June. Hummels has made 76 international appearances and Flick has left the door open should the Dortmund defender prove his form.  “We are keeping the door open for all those who perform and have enormous quality,” said Flick. Flick replaced Joachim Loew as head coach of Germany in September and Hummels has yet to play under the new national team boss. In his absence, Germany punched their ticket for next year’s World Cup, which kicks off on November 21 with the final on December 18, 2022. The defender is carrying a persistent knee problem and Flick has so far said he resisted calling up Hummels to allow him more time to rest. Hummels, Thomas Mueller and Jerome Boateng were all axed from the national squad by Loew in March 2019 due to the team’s disastrous World Cup campaign in 2018. Following a change of heart by Loew, Mueller and Hummels were recalled for the Euro 2020 finals.

Premier League on alert after return to emergency Covid measures London (AFP) – Norwich are waiting anxiously for Covid-19 results ahead of their clash with Manchester United after Premier League sides were told to return to emergency protocols to limit the spread of the virus. Bayern star Kimmich ‘must be patient’ with covid recovery Berlin (AFP) – Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann said Friday he expects Joshua Kimmich to make a full recovery from Covid-19, but the Germany midfielder has been warned the path to full fitness may be long. Kimmich is not expected to play again until January as he recovers from lung damage caused by covid after the 26-year-old, who is unvaccinated, tested positive last month. In a statement, Kimmich has said he “can’t wait” to play and train again, but his enforced spell on the sidelines must continue as he has “slight infiltrations in my lungs”. On Friday, Nagelsmann made it clear Kimmich will miss Bayern’s last three Bundesliga games of 2021 only as a precautionary measure. “I’m not at all worried because the infiltrations are not dramatic,” said Nagelsmann. “The break is a safety measure and no damage of consequence is to be expected.” Kimmich is set to be one of Germany’s leading players at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Like the defensive midfielder, his Bayern team-mate Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting also has infiltrations of the lungs after testing positive. Nagelsmann said both players will do light exercise over the next ten days, with their health closely monitored, “then the infiltrations should be gone” and their training can be increased. Kimmich has not played since November 6, after which he tested positive and only came out of house quarantine this week. “It annoys him that he is absent,” Nagelsmann revealed. “He’s one of the most ambitious players we have.  He’s someone who plays frequently and has ants in his pants now.” Kimmich sparked a heated vaccination debate in October when he revealed that he had declined a vaccine against covid due to “personal concerns”. Nagelsmann said Kimmich is fully aware of the criticism he has taken, but insisted the footballer does not deserve to be treated as a scapegoat. “There is no compulsory vaccination here (in Germany). He would have preferred the last few weeks to have been different,” admitted Nagelsmann, who like most of the Bayern squad is fully vaccinated. While Bayern hope Kimmich and Choupo-Moting make full and speedy recoveries, other Bundesliga footballers have not been so fortunate. One example is Freiburg’s French midfielder Jonathan Schmid, who has not played since August after contracting covid and is still rebuilding his fitness more than three months later. Kimmich has been warned not to rush his recovery. “It will be a rocky road to a comeback,” Germany’s three-time wrestling world champion Frank Staebler told news portal t-online. Staebler contracted covid in late 2020 and after a long period of recovery, he won a Greco-Roman bronze medal at this year’s Tokyo Olympics. But it was a lengthy process. “In this case, (doing) a lot doesn’t help much. You just need a lot of patience,” Staebler added. “Joshua Kimmich now has something he has never had before and that is very difficult to assess, because there are no long-term medical studies.”

Martial wants to leave Man Utd in January, says agent London (AFP) – Anthony Martial wants to leave Manchester United in the January transfer window after struggling to get game time at Old Trafford this season, according to his agent. The 26-year-old France forward, who joined United from Monaco in 2015, has started only two Premier League games this season and has scored just once. Martial’s representative, Philippe Lamboley, executive director of USFA Management, told Sky Sports News: “Anthony wishes to leave the club in January. “He just needs to play. He doesn’t want to stay in January and I will speak to the club soon.” Martial still has at least three years left on his contract at Old Trafford, having signed a new deal in 2019 that includes an option to extend for a further year. He has fallen down the pecking order at United, who have an array of attacking talent to choose from, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood. While he did not mention Martial by name, United interim manager Ralf Rangnick hinted there could be departures in January when he was asked about the bloated size of his squad on Friday. “It’s still a big squad. We need to make sure that players want to stay here,” he said. “If they see they are not getting enough game time here it might make sense to speak to players individually and see if a loan deal might make sense, but right now it’s too early.” Rangnick also revealed that injured United midfielder Paul Pogba is still around four weeks away from returning to action. Pogba has been undergoing recovery work in Dubai after suffering a thigh injury on international duty with France last month. The World Cup winner, linked with a move away from United for several months, is due to return to England this weekend and Rangnick is keen to meet him. “He is better to come back and then we will get to know each other in person on Sunday. We had a telephone call for about 10 or 15 minutes,” Rangnick said ahead of Saturday’s Premier League match at Norwich. “He told me he is getting better but obviously he is still not fully fit, so it will take another couple of weeks until he is fit for training again and then of course he has been idle for quite some time, so I guess it will take another couple of weeks to get match-fit. “In the first instance it’s important he gets fully fit in order to be able to train with the rest of the group and then we have to develop him physically and tactically to be fit to play in the Premier League.”

Gerrard would swap Liverpool hero status for Villa win on Anfield return London (AFP) – Steven Gerrard admits he would be happy to give up his hero status at Liverpool in exchange for an Aston Villa win on Saturday as the Anfield legend prepares to return to his former club “with a smile on his face”. Gerrard, who enjoyed a stellar 17-year playing career with Liverpool, returns there just a month into his reign as Villa boss determined to shut out the “noise”. The 41-year-old, who left Rangers last month to move to the Premier League, has won three of his first games in charge, with the only setback being a defeat to champions Manchester City. “I’m going back to a club where I spent many years and it brings a smile to my face for a couple of reasons,” said Gerrard, who has long been touted as a potential successor to Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.  “One, I’ve got a good relationship with a lot of people at the club. I had a fantastic time there, a really good journey, I’m a local boy. It was the team I supported growing up and I will always support that team. “But at the same time it brings a smile to my face because I’ve got the opportunity to go there and compete against a good team and a good manager and try to win the game. That’s my only focus. “If I’m on the bus heading back down the M6 towards Birmingham and I’m not the most popular at Anfield, so be it.” Klopp’s free-scoring Liverpool are second in the Premier League, just one point behind leaders Manchester City after four straight wins. “They are in a fantastic place and on top form. We’re aware of the challenge and how difficult it’s going to be,” said Gerrard, who described Liverpool’s 20-goal Mohamed Salah as “100 per cent the best player in the world now”. “We’ve got to take confidence and belief from the start that we’ve made,” he added. Gerrard, who started his coaching career under Klopp in the club’s youth system, said he was grateful the German’s help. “The best bit of advice I got from him was take your own team and do it your own way,” he said. “What identity you want to use, go and make your own mistakes away from the cameras. Evolve, start your own journey — and I’ll give you whatever support you need. “That was golden advice for me as a player coming out of a long career who has ambitions to go into coaching and management.”

London (AFP) – Norwich are waiting anxiously for Covid-19 results ahead of their clash with Manchester United after Premier League sides were told to return to emergency protocols to limit the spread of the virus. Tottenham’s Europa League Conference game with Rennes on Thursday was postponed after Spurs reported that eight players and five members of staff had tested positive. Sunday’s match between Brighton and Tottenham is also off as fears rise over the potential impact of the surging Omicron variant on the English top-flight. Norwich manager Dean Smith, whose side lost 3-0 to Tottenham last week, faces a nervous wait to find out if any of his players will be ruled out of the United match because of a positive test result. “We have got a couple of knocks and have got a couple of Covid-related issues that we are waiting on results for this morning,” he told his pre-match press conference on Friday. “I can’t really let you in on any names, but there’s a couple of players whom w

Reus targets Dortmund winning run to pressure Bayern Berlin (AFP) – With the prolific Erling Haaland fit and firing again, Borussia Dortmund hope to round out the year in style and close the gap on Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich. “We want to put pressure on Bayern, so the next three games are really important,” said captain Marco Reus ahead of Saturday’s derby at Bochum. Last weekend’s 3-2 home loss to Bayern left second-placed Dortmund four points adrift. Haaland has bagged four goals in his three games back after a hip injury, including two as a substitute in Tuesday’s 5-0 rout of Besiktas — Dortmund’s biggest home win in the Champions League. Marco Rose’s team look like a completely different side with Haaland, and Reus wants wins over Bochum, Greuther Fuerth and Hertha Berlin in the coming nine days. All three are in the bottom half of the table.   “Ideally, we need to let the results speak for themselves,” said Reus. He admitted Dortmund’s failure to reach the last 16 of the Champions League “still hurts”, but the goal is now to win the Europa League. The draw for the knock-out stages takes place Monday. However, Dortmund can expect a tough encounter against local rivals Bochum, who have won three of their last four league games to rise to mid-table. Bayern have a tricky fixture on Saturday at home to Mainz, who sprang a 2-1 upset when the sides last met in April, but the Bavarians have won 24 of the 32 meetings between the clubs in the league. Bayern are without Germany midfielder Joshua Kimmich until the new year as he recovers from lung damage caused by Covid-19. Julian Nagelsmann’s men swept aside Barcelona on Wednesday to complete a perfect Champions League group stage campaign for the second time in three seasons. Domenico Tedesco takes charge of his first game as RB Leipzig coach for the visit of Borussia Moenchengladbach. The 36-year-old former Schalke boss was appointed Thursday, four days after Leipzig sacked Jesse Marsch following inconsistent results. Leipzig pulled off a 2-1 home win over 10-man Manchester City in the final round of Champions League group stage matches on Tuesday under caretaker coach Achim Beierlorzer. Gladbach, who thrashed Bayern 5-0 in the German Cup in October, will be eager to bounce back from a 6-0 humbling at home to Freiburg last Sunday when all the goals came in a jaw-dropping first half. Player to watch: Erling Haaland His two goals in 27 minutes after coming off the bench replacement against Besiktas signalled that Haaland is back to his deadly best. The Norwegian has scored 22 goals this season for club and country, despite missing five weeks with a hip injury. He will expect to add to his haul over the next week, with bottom side Fuerth, who were thrashed 7-1 by Bayer Leverkusen last time out, awaiting Dortmund on December 15.  Key stats 19 – Goals scored by Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski in 21 league games against Mainz. He has been on the winning side 17 times. 198 – Fouls by tough-tackling Mainz, a league-high so far this season. Bayern have committed just 105, the fewest in the division. 250 – Club captain Christian Guenter is poised to become the first Freiburg player to reach the milestone of Bundesliga appearances at home to Hoffenheim on Saturday. All have come under current head coach Christian Streich.   Fixtures (all times 1430 GMT unless stated) Friday  Cologne v Augsburg (1930) Saturday Bayern Munich v Mainz, RB Leipzig v Borussia Moenchengladbach, Freiburg v Hoffenheim, Hertha Berlin v Arminia Bielefeld, VfL Bochum v Borussia Dortmund, VfL Wolfsburg v VfB Stuttgart (1730) Sunday Greuther Fuerth v Union Berlin, Eintracht Frankfurt v Bayer Leverkusen (1630)

Gerrard returns to Liverpool as Covid stalks Premier League London (AFP) – Steven Gerrard will be determined to give Liverpool a bloody nose on an emotional return to Anfield with Aston Villa on Saturday as the coronavirus once more casts a shadow over the Premier League. Former Liverpool midfielder Gerrard has won three of his four league matches since taking over from Dean Smith at Villa Park but faces a tough task against Jurgen Klopp’s free-scoring team. Dethroned leaders Chelsea will be desperate to get back on track against Leeds this weekend, while Newcastle start a tough run of games that could make or break their season. AFP Sport takes a look at some of the talking points ahead of the action. Gerrard factor Steven Gerrard is widely expected to return to Liverpool as manager one day after a stellar playing career at Anfield, but he has been at pains to say he does not regard the Villa job as a mere stepping stone. The 41-year-old left Scottish champions Rangers last month to pit his wits as a manager in the Premier League and has had an immediate impact. Wins over Brighton, Crystal Palace and Leicester have lifted Villa to 10th place, with the only blot on his copybook being a narrow 2-1 defeat to leaders Manchester City. He knows that although he is likely to receive a warm welcome at Liverpool, the goodwill will end when the home side kick off in search of their fifth straight league win. Gerrard, who won the Champions League, two FA Cups, three League Cups and the UEFA Cup at Anfield, promised he would not get caught up in the occasion. “I certainly won’t make it about me,” he said. “If other people do I can’t control that. It’s about us going there full of confidence and belief that we can go and take something from the game.” Leaky Chelsea Chelsea went into last weekend’s game against West Ham, which ended in a 3-2 defeat, with the proud record of just six goals conceded in 14 Premier League matches but they have now sprung a leak. The 3-3 Champions League draw against Zenit Saint Petersburg on Wednesday meant a Thomas Tuchel side had conceded three or more goals in consecutive games for the first time since April 2019, when he was manager of Paris Saint-Germain. The German knows Chelsea must recover their defensive solidity as the bedrock of a title challenge because they do not boast the attacking resources of Manchester City or Liverpool. Forwards Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner are now level with defender Reece James and attacking midfielder Mason Mount at the top of Chelsea’s goalscoring charts, but tellingly they have just five goals apiece in all competitions. Captain Cesar Azpilicueta has demanded a reaction from the Blues, who are two points behind leaders City. “We have to have a reaction on Saturday in front of our fans, and all together try to get the win and have a good performance from the first minute, and then from there start building our confidence,” he said. Spurs fixture crunch An outbreak of the coronavirus at Tottenham has thrown the club’s plans into chaos, with Antonio Conte’s side now facing a potential fixture pile-up. Spurs’ crucial midweek Europa Conference League match against Rennes was called off on Wednesday after the alarming Covid outbreak and 24 hours later their Premier League match at Brighton on Sunday was also postponed. Tottenham already have a match to make up after last month’s game at Burnley was postponed due to heavy snow. It is not a new conundrum for the club, who last season had matches postponed due to Covid outbreaks within opposition camps, but it is a major headache during a busy time of the year. Fixtures (1500 GMT unless stated) Friday Brentford v Watford (2000) Saturday Manchester City v Wolves (1230), Arsenal v Southampton, Chelsea v Leeds, Liverpool v Aston Villa, Norwich v Manchester United (1730) Sunday Burnley v West Ham (1400), Leicester v Newcastle (1400), Crystal Palace v Everton (1630) Brighton v Tottenham – postponed due to Covid outbreak

Real Madrid aim to tighten grasp on La Liga in derby against Atletico Madrid (AFP) – Carlo Ancelotti was adamant Real Madrid have not sewn up the La Liga title already but beat Atletico Madrid on Sunday and they might not be far away.  Madrid are 10 points clear of Atletico heading into the derby at the Santiago Bernabeu, with the chance to extend the gap to 13 points, two weeks before Christmas.  Atletico will play a game in hand away at Granada on December 22, which could allow them to reduce the deficit, although a trip to Sevilla in between means the gap might also widen.  Sevilla and Real Betis are closer, with Sevilla eight points behind Madrid, also with a game in hand, to be played at home to Barcelona on December 21.  But most believe Atletico have the best chance of reeling Real Madrid in, the reigning champions who showed last season they have the resilience, particularly in the big games, that Sevilla have lacked. Sevilla still miss some cutting edge up front and they will also have the Europa League to negotiate in the second half of the season, a competition the club has made its own in recent years and is likely to go far in again.  Betis are flying and deservedly sit third on the back of their win over Barcelona at Camp Nou last weekend but a top-four finish would be a triumph for Manuel Pellegrini’s side. Few expect them to last the distance in the title race.  Real Sociedad have dropped off, without a victory now in three, while Barcelona in seventh are 16 points off the pace. Even having played a game fewer than Real Madrid, it would take a revival of epic proportions for Barca to overhaul Ancelotti’s team from here.  “We have an advantage but the league is still open,” said Ancelotti on Saturday. “We can’t think now about winning La Liga, I don’t want anyone to think like this.” When Madrid followed up a goalless draw against Villarreal with a 2-1 defeat by Espanyol at the start of October, the title race appeared thrillingly open, with the top five separated by three points and all of the chief candidates seemingly fallible.  – Ancelotti sticks to winning formula – Madrid responded by winning 2-1 away at Barcelona, for the start of an 11-match unbeaten run in all competitions, that has included 10 victories and only six goals conceded.  The 21-year-old Vinicius Junior has been a revelation up front while the return of Ferland Mendy at left-back has been integral to improvement in defence. Madrid are yet to lose a game this season with Mendy on the pitch.  Ancelotti has found a winning formula too, one he has stuck to rigidly in recent weeks in terms of both system and personnel.  The experienced trio of Luka Modric, Casemiro and Toni Kroos has been rinsed and repeated in a familiar 4-3-3, with David Alaba and Eder Militao forming an accomplished partnership at the back.  The only spot up for grabs has been the third of the front three next to Karim Benzema and Vinicius, which has been swapped between Marco Asensio and Rodrygo. Gareth Bale is regaining fitness and Eden Hazard out of favour.  Ancelotti’s refusal to rotate might come back to haunt him later in the season, with Benzema’s availability for the derby in doubt after he was injured against Real Sociedad last weekend, in his 19th start out of a possible 20 this term.  Benzema missed the win over Inter Milan on Tuesday but Ancelotti was optimistic he would recover in time. If not, Luka Jovic will likely continue in his place. “We have a few days to see if Karim recovers, I think he will,” said Ancelotti.  Even if Madrid suffer the effects of fatigue or absentees in the second half of the season, they might well have the cushion to cope. Atletico, who have lost two out of their last four in the league, cannot afford to slip further away.  Barcelona will be attempting to overcome the disappointment of dropping out of the Champions League on Sunday when they travel to Osasuna while a battle of the surprise contenders sees Betis host Real Sociedad. On Saturday, Sevilla visit Athletic Bilbao.  Fixtures (GMT)  Friday  Mallorca v Celta Vigo (2000)  Saturday  Espanyol v Levante (1300), Alaves v Getafe (1515), Valencia v Elche (1730), Athletic Bilbao v Sevilla (2000)  Sunday  Villarreal v Rayo Vallecano (1300), Osasuna v Barcelona (1515), Real Betis v Real Sociedad v (1730), Real Madrid v Atletico Madrid (2000)  Monday  Cadiz v Granada (2000)

Lille’s Champions League run gives French football a lift Paris (AFP) – With French football reeling this season due to repeated incidents of crowd violence, Lille’s achievement in reaching the Champions League last 16 comes as a much-needed bright spot. While an all-star Paris Saint-Germain dominate the headlines, Lille have followed up their remarkable Ligue 1 title triumph last season by making it through to the knockout stages of Europe’s elite club competition for the first time since 2006/07. That they did it by winning their group, while PSG only came second behind Manchester City in their section, is all the more notable. A Champions League group also containing Red Bull Salzburg, Sevilla and Wolfsburg may not have been the toughest in the competition, but it was the most competitive. Lille did not win any of their first three games but bounced back to win all of their final three matches, including beating Wolfsburg 3-1 in Germany on Wednesday, to top their group. Now they will be seeded in Monday’s last-16 draw, ensuring they will avoid many of the biggest names, although holders Chelsea are among the potential opponents. “It is the first time Lille have won their group, so it is a historic achievement,” said coach Jocelyn Gourvennec. “It is an important moment in the history of the club. We have done Ligue 1 proud.” Lille won the title in May despite being burdened by big debts, and they saw inspirational manager Christophe Galtier leave for rivals Nice, while outstanding goalkeeper Mike Maignan and midfielder Boubakary Soumare were sold. Eyebrows were raised when Gourvennec, out of management since leaving modest Guingamp after their relegation in 2019, was appointed as Galtier’s successor. Their title defence has not got off the ground and they remain in the bottom half despite winning their last two matches. Their European form should now provide a lift for a club that boasts France’s top scorer in Canadian hitman Jonathan David, who has 11 Ligue 1 goals and 14 in all competitions. The only question now is whether they will be able to hold onto their best players in the January transfer window, with French international Jonathan Ikone one who could be sold. In the meantime Lille will hope to close on the teams above them in Ligue 1 on Sunday when they face Lyon, whose own troubled start to the season was exacerbated this week when they were docked a point. That was a punishment after their game against Marseille last month was abandoned when Dimitri Payet was struck on the head by a bottle, the latest trouble to hit a Ligue 1 fixture this season. The match will be replayed from the start behind closed doors at a later date. Player to watch: Ludovic Ajorque The giant centre-forward from the French Indian Ocean island of Reunion has scored nine Ligue 1 goals this season for Strasbourg, a figure bettered only by Jonathan David. Ajorque, who scored the opener in last week’s 3-0 win at Nice, has been the catalyst in turning Strasbourg into the most prolific team in France behind PSG. Having already scored an impressive 16 times last season, it is not too much of a stretch to say that the 27-year-old could yet break into the France squad ahead of next year’s World Cup, especially with Olivier Giroud falling from favour.  Key stats 6 – Brest have won their last six Ligue 1 games, the best run in their history. They had previously gone 15 top-flight games without a win going back into last season. 12 – Saint-Etienne’s points total after 17 games, leaving them bottom of the table. Manager Claude Puel was sacked after last week’s 5-0 home loss to Rennes. 15 – The number of years since Lille were last in the Champions League last 16. New York eye Timbers upset in MLS Cup final Portland (AFP) – New York City boss Ronny Deila says his team are ready to rip up the form book once more when they take on the Portland Timbers in Oregon on Saturday looking to claim the club’s first Major League Soccer crown. After an Eastern Conference playoff run which included away victories over the top-seeded New England Revolution and second-seeded Philadelphia Union, Deila is plotting another upset on the road against a Timbers team targeting a second MLS Cup title. “What we have done so far has been just amazing,” said Deila. “But the biggest one is coming on Saturday and we’ll do everything to win there.” The 46-year-old Norwegian coach, who guided Celtic to back-to-back Scottish titles in 2015 and 2016, says City’s giant-killing playoff run is sign of his team’s increasing maturity. “We haven’t dealt with the pressure before, and now we’re starting to do that,” said Deila. “I think the learning for the whole club to win football games and how to deal with that and how to win them when the pressure is up, that’s something you have to learn over time.” Victory over Portland on Saturday would mark a major milestone for City, who joined MLS in 2015 as the league’s 20th expansion team amid much fanfare. Part of the global City Football Group headed by English champions Manchester City, the early years of the New York franchise were loaded with expectations, which for the most part remained unfulfilled. Star names such as Frank Lampard, Andrea Pirlo and David Villa helped the club gain a foothold in the league, but were ultimately unable to deliver any silverware. In recent seasons however the club’s recruitment strategy has pivoted towards younger, up-and-coming talent — either homegrown or from overseas — enabling Deila to build a hungry squad now just 90 minutes away from a first MLS championship. – Playoff heartbreak – Defensive midfielder James Sands, a 21-year-old product of City’s academy, embodies the club’s new spirit. “I’ve seen this team have such a tough go of it in playoffs,” Sands said after last week’s victory over the Union in Philadelphia which sealed the Eastern Conference crown.  “I remember previous years in the playoffs losing to Columbus, losing to  Toronto, losing to  Orlando – all such heartbreaking games.  “To finally get over that hurdle means a lot and it means a lot for everybody, but especially the guys who have been on the team a couple years and have gone through it.” City goalkeeper Sean Johnson says a win on Saturday would mark the culmination of what he describes as “an unbelievable commitment to success.” “It’s taken a little bit but the guys have been committed to making sure that we achieve something,” Johnson said. City face a Timbers side steeped in history which dates back to their earliest incarnation as a member of the North American Soccer League between 1975 and 1982. Since their rebirth as a Major League Soccer expansion team in 2011, the club has won one MLS Cup, in 2015, and reached the final three years ago, where they finished runners-up to Atlanta United. Under head coach Giovanni Savarese, the Timbers have reached the playoffs four years running. This season’s playoff run included an upset win over Colorado in the Western Conference semi-finals, before Real Salt Lake were vanquished at home last weekend. “To be able to host MLS Cup, it is a dream come to reality,” Savarese said.   “This team works so hard, the players, the staff, everyone, on a difficult season,” the Venezuelan added. “The guys were able to turn things around and we host this game here. It was something that we wanted to have and it became a reality.”

How parity in MLS grows the game, but develops limitations Leicester City winning the Premier League in 2016 is the most glaring instance of parity in soccer providing greatness. At 5000-1 odds, every soccer fan had a soft spot for the Foxes, with the exception of title-challengers Tottenham. The achievement rekindled the idea that any team can win any competition. After all, Leicester looked doom for relegation the season prior. The same persists regarding the debacle of the European Super League. The world of soccer rose up against 12 clubs putting themselves on an elitist pedestal, which would destroy the potential for the teams just on the cusp of continuous success. Despite these examples, soccer has a knack for domination from a handful of teams. England has a ‘big six’, Bayern Munich and Juventus won each of its domestic leagues from 2012/13 to 2019/20. The last LaLiga champion not called Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid of Barcelona was Valencia all the way back in the 2003/04 season. Despite the dominance, we still love the game. Perhaps that is because of the different rewards for placement. Champions League or Europa League qualification are well in the range for teams. Even though the same crop of teams tend to win European competitions, underdog teams like Ajax in 2018/19 or Roma the season prior provide scintillating storylines. But, what about Major League Soccer? Competitions like the CONCACAF Champions League or the Leagues Cup provide incentive for some of those on-the-cusp teams, but parity in soccer is the standard. It fits the mold of American sports pumping out different champions and finalists each season, to a certain extent. MLS remains proud of its different success stories. Here is why that is a good thing to tout, but it could also be beneficial to have a strong team that consistently reaches the mountaintop. Parity in soccer and growth For this, Major League Soccer serves as the example. For one, the MLS Cup Final takes place on Saturday. New York City FC, playing in its first MLS Cup Final takes on the Portland Timbers, which played in two finals in its history. Recently, MLS released a statistic showing that MLS leads parity statistics regarding championship appearances. With the nature of postseason tournaments not necessarily existing in European or South American soccer, it is hard to make that comparison. However, the league demonstrated its parity since its inception. MLS showed that, despite its youth compared to MLB, the NFL, the NHL and the NBA, the league sent the highest percentage of teams to the conference finals in its history. Essentially, the Philadelphia Union and NYCFC marked the 18th and 19th teams to reach the final four. Now, over 70 percent of MLS teams can say it played in a conference final. Total Teams in League Different Teams to Appear in Conference Finals Percentage of Teams to Reach Conference Finals Different Champions in the last Decade Percentage of Teams to win a Championship in the last decade MLS 27 19 70.4 7 25.9 NFL 32 21 65.6 8 25 NHL 32 20 63.0 6 18.8 MLB 30 17 56.7 8 26.7 NBA 30 17 56.7 7 23.3 The pros of parity and growth Fans love success, you could argue it is why we support certain teams. Major League Soccer remains a young league in terms of both soccer leagues and professional American sports leagues. Therefore, it is paramount for the expansion teams to set up a proper, consistent fanbase in their catchment areas. What better way to do that than through immediate results. Take a club like Atlanta United. Due to the inherent parity of expansion drafts taking players from other teams and granting them to new teams, Atlanta United developed early success on the field. Off of it, Atlanta became the most-popular team in the league based on attendance. Despite playing at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta United garnered a stadium attendance of 119 percent capacity. Of course, some seats were closed, and people filled in. However, there is a reason Atlanta consistently tops the attendance charts. Parity comes in to play regarding that early success. As stated previously, MLS proudly recognizes the success of a variety of teams as opposed to a handful of the same teams playing in finals. Stadium attendance and results go hand-in-hand. Look at clubs like that fared worse over recent years. The Columbus Crew, FC Dallas and Chicago Fire lacked results on the field building up to 2018. Those three clubs consistently ranked poorly. Columbus Crew saw a steady rise during and leading up to its first MLS Cup triumph in 2020. The cons Parity seems great to grow the game organically. Give each team an equitable chance to grow from the ground up. Yet, this could be seen as only fitting for individual fan bases. This is something that MLS wants to tackle, but the league’s ambitions extend beyond that. For leagues outside of the U.S., where soccer is the established dominant force in the sporting world, allegiances are, more often than not, set in stone. That is all with a grain of salt, however. The depth and breadth of soccer systems in Europe and South America allow for people to support their local team that may compete in the third or fourth tier while still supporting a bigger club also in the area. So, for international fans, parity could actually hurt soccer leagues. The most recent Ligue 1 title went to Lille. For underdog fans, its a great story. Lille unseated a PSG squad that won seven of the last eight Ligue 1 crowns. However, does this truly get more people to watch the league? In European soccer, eyes often go to the best possible team in a league. After all, the end-goal for the majority of the major clubs is success in the Champions League. Undoubtedly, PSG pulls in more eyes for the league holistically. Of course, a counterargument to that point is that PSG losing forced the club to go out and deliver one of the best transfer windows in recent memory by acquiring Lionel Messi, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Achraf Hakimi and other stars. These players may reduce the parity in the league with PSG already dominating domestically, but more people may tune in to watch the star-studded lineup. For instance, Messi’s PSG debut pulled in an absurd number of viewers compared to normal Ligue 1 viewership. Almost 20 million unique viewers watched the former-Barcelona captain play for 25 minutes against Reims. Playoffs versus League Play As stated previously, MLS proudly discusses its parity regarding conference final and MLS Cup Final appearances. As many know, MLS uses a playoff system to determine a champion, a key difference compared to the league-based crowns awarded in Europe and South America. The tournament-style playoffs that exist throughout American sports are exciting. Any team that qualifies, which is generally around half the teams in the league, has a legitimate shot at a title. Parity in soccer can be exciting, sure. However, there are inherent consequences to the format used to prop up that parity that may go against long-term success. The Beauty of Playoffs If anything, the 2021 MLS Cup Playoffs showed how great parity in soccer can be. Real Salt Lake stunned the western conference to squeak into the playoffs. A monumental defensive effort yielded a penalty shootout win before a 90th-minute winner sent RSL to its first semifinals appearance since 2013. On the other hand, NYCFC, which only joined the league in 2015, will appear in its first MLS Cup Final on December 11. The two top seeds in MLS lost in dramatic games in their first playoff games of the season. Moreover, the New England Revolution put together the greatest regular season in MLS history. However, the aforementioned NYCFC went to Gillette Stadium and knocked out the winners of the Supporters’ Shield. It is unpredictable, and that is what makes it fun. Playoffs provides more opportunity for a league that has more teams than the majority of soccer leagues. The same can be said about the other American sports. Storylines, heroes and drama develop throughout each game of the playoffs, making it can’t-miss action. Unrewarding seasons The coin is always two-sided, however. The New England Revolution put up a historic season of success over the season. Most wins and highest points earned per game in the history of the league. All Bruce Arena and the Revolution have to show for it is the Supporters’ Shield and a birth into the CONCACAF Champions League. It shows a great season, but the end-goal in MLS differs from other soccer leagues. Essentially, the parity via playoffs in MLS allows for teams to ‘breeze’ through the regular season, putting everything earned from the 34-game season at risk. MLS Cup Final, 2011 in Los Angeles For example, MLS prioritizing parity via playoffs prevented the No. 1 seed from reaching the MLS Cup Final, again. Only two teams that finished at the top of their respective conference at the end of the regular season qualified for MLS’s championship match. Both those teams, Los Angeles Galaxy in 2011 and Toronto FC in 2017, won MLS Cup that season. Any team can get on a hot run of form. In 2012, just one season after finishing as the best team in the western conference, LA Galaxy finished as the fourth-best team in the west, and the eighth-best team overall. In England, that does not even get a spot in the UEFA Europa Conference League. The Galaxy got hot when it mattered, eventually defeating the fifth-best team in the east, the Houston Dynamo. This is what makes Leicester City’s achievement in the 2015/16 season so remarkable. Yes, a run of good form against lower opposition propped up the Foxes.
