Top 5 must-see soccer games on TV this weekend Although the title race is effectively over in the Premier League, there are still some eye-catching clashes to enjoy from the division this weekend. English football’s top flight dominates the latest selections, with three of the five matches picked from the competition. Elsewhere, there’s a huge derby in Spain and a clash between two surprise title challengers in the Bundesliga. All kick-offs are in Eastern time. Enjoy your weekend and enjoy the games! Leicester City vs. Chelsea Saturday, February 1, 7:30 a.m. ET, NBCSN, Universo, fuboTV, Hulu Live, Sling Blue and AT&T TV Now (free trial) Although Leicester and Chelsea sit third and fourth in the Premier League respectively, it feels like both teams would benefit from a spark. Inconsistency has crept into the play of both. Leicester were rampant in the early weeks of the season, although they have lost four and won three of their last seven matches. They will also need to lift themselves after a last-gasp loss to Aston Villa in the League Cup semi-final in midweek. Chelsea are in a similar position, with their season meshing fantastic and frustrating performances. That was epitomised in their previous Premier League outing, when they twice went ahead against 10-man Arsenal, only to end up with a 2-2 draw. Leicester are secure in third place, with an eight-point lead over Chelsea and a 14-point advantage over Manchester United in fifth. If they were to win here, it would surely be enough to guarantee Brendan Rodgers’ side a position in the Champions League next season. Real Madrid vs. Atletico Madrid Saturday, February 1, 10 a.m. ET, beIN SPORTS, beIN SPORTS en Español, fuboTV, Sling Latino, Sling World Sports, and Fanatiz (free trial) Real Madrid can move six points clear at the top of La Liga with a win over city rivals Atletico Madrid on Saturday. With Barcelona slipping up and losing 2-0 to Valencia last weekend, Madrid were able to put some daylight between themselves and their big rivals. A goal from Nacho was enough for Los Blancos to win at Real Valladolid, with Zinedine Zidane’s team continuing their impressive defensive record this term. Atletico have done well in this fixture in recent years, although their morale will be at rock-bottom before they visit the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday. Last week they were beaten by Eibar and Cultural Leonesa, before being held to then-bottom club Leganes on home soil. Barcelona are in action against Levante at home on Sunday. If Los Blancos can apply some pressure on Saturday with a win after negotiating what is typically one of their biggest fixtures of the season, then it’ll feel like a big step in the title race. RB Leipzig vs. Borussia Monchengladbach Saturday, February 1, 12:30 p.m. ET, FS2, TUDN, Sling Blue + Sports Extra, Hulu + Live TV, AT&T TV Now and fuboTV (free trial) The Bundesliga title race is the most exciting in Europe at the moment. Leipzig and Monchenglabach are two of the underdogs in this encapsulating battle. Leipzig currently sit top of the pile, although they are now just a point clear of defending champions and favourites Bayern Munich. That was after an uncharacteristically sloppy performance last weekend, as they went down 2-0 to Eintracht Frankfurt. While their form before that showdown was exceptional, manager Julian Nagelsmann has been critical of his players’ attitude following that loss and it’ll be intriguing to see what kind of reaction he gets when BMG visit on Sunday. Borussia are just two points back on the leaders, although they’ve struggled to reach the levels that they showed earlier in the season as of late. A big win, like in Saturday’s match at Leipzig, feels like it’s needed if they are going to remain a genuine contender for the championship in Germany. Manchester United vs. Wolverhampton Wanderers Saturday, February 1, 12:30 p.m. ET, NBC, Universo, fuboTV, Hulu Live, Sling Blue and AT&T TV Now (free trial) Manchester United and Wolves will face off for the fourth time this season on Saturday evening, although there does feel like there’ll be an edge to this upcoming fixture. The Old Trafford crowd will be hoping to get a glimpse of the club’s high-profile January acquisition, with Bruno Fernandes in line to make his debut for the club. The former Sporting CP man should add an exciting dimension to the team, with his dribbling skill and goalscoring making him a huge hit in Portugal. Wolves will feel confident of picking up a positive result nonetheless. Nuno Santo’s team were knocked out the FA Cup by United earlier in the campaign at Old Trafford, although that elimination has given the team a significant rest period since their last outing. Both teams are locked on 34 points going into this fixture, six behind Chelsea. If the Blues slip up at Leicester, whoever is victorious in this showdown will feel as though they are in the mix for a top-four berth. Tottenham Hotspur vs. Manchester City Sunday, February 2, 11:30 a.m. ET, NBCSN, Telemundo, fuboTV, Hulu Live, Sling Blue and AT&T TV Now (free trial) The Premier League weekend finishes with a heavyweight showdown in north London, with defending champions Manchester City heading to Tottenham. The match is a more important one for Spurs. Like United and Wolves, they are sat on 34 points and on the brink of a possible challenge for a top-four berth. However, the team haven’t been performing to their best as of late, with Jose Mourinho’s side just edging past Norwich City in their previous home encounter. City were beaten by United in the Carabao Cup in midweek, although they were still able to progress to the competition final on aggregate. Pep Guardiola watched on as his team created and spurned a host of chances at the Etihad Stadium. More ruthlessness will be required to take three points from this encounter. City are also likely to be boosted by the return of Aymeric Laporte, who was rested for the match with the Red Devils following his comeback from injury against Sheffield United.

Klopp questions Liverpool attitude after Brighton draw Liverpool (AFP) – Jurgen Klopp criticised the way Liverpool responded to squandering a two-goal lead as Brighton claimed a 2-2 draw at Anfield on Saturday. Jordan Henderson and Sadio Mane had put the Reds 2-0 in front after 24 minutes but Graham Potter’s team fought back with goals from Enock Mwepu and Leandro Trossard either side of half-time. It was just the sixth time Liverpool failed to win a Premier League home game after leading by two goals. Yves Bissouma hit the post and Trossard had a late goal disallowed for offside as the Seagulls threatened to complete a remarkable comeback win. “In the second half, we were not good enough. The body language I didn’t like it all,” the German said.  “It was like, ‘Oh my God, it’s really tough’. Yeah, it was clear before the game. “The best way to defend Brighton is to have the ball and play in the spaces where they are exposed, but we didn’t do that and that’s a problem.” Mane and Mohamed Salah had goals ruled out for handball and offside respectively as Liverpool dominated but failed to blow Brighton away in the first half. Klopp’s side remain second but missed the chance to keep pace with leaders Chelsea, who moved three points clear following their 3-0 win at Newcastle and Manchester City’s shock 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace. “It feels like a defeat, not only because we were 2-0 up and didn’t win. It’s because we scored two of the most beautiful goals I’ve ever seen us score, which were disallowed,” added Klopp. Liverpool host Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday before visiting fourth-placed West Ham in the Premier League next weekend.

Champions ‘cease operations’ as money problems dog Chinese football Shanghai (AFP) – Chinese Super League champions Jiangsu FC have “ceased operations”, the club said on Sunday, underlining the financial problems roiling football in the country. Jiangsu, who won the domestic title for the first time just three months ago, are owned by the conglomerate Suning — which also owns Italian giants Inter Milan. The demise of Jiangsu, until recently known as Jiangsu Suning, could be followed in the coming days by the closure of fellow CSL side Tianjin Teda. Chinese football has in recent years gained a reputation for lavish spending on foreign players and coaches, as the country pushed to become a world leader in the sport. Jiangsu brought in ex-England coach Fabio Capello and signed Brazilians Alex Teixeira and Ramires for 50 million euros and 28 million euros respectively. In the summer of 2019 they came close to capturing Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale. But, even prior to the coronavirus pandemic, money had begun to dry up across Chinese football. “Even though we are reluctant to part with the players who have won us the highest honours, and fans who have shared solidarity with the club, we have to regretfully make an announcement,” Jiangsu FC said in a statement. “From today, Jiangsu Football Club ceases the operation of its teams.” The club from the eastern city of Nanjing blamed an “overlap of various uncontrollable elements”. “In the past six months the club has been looking around to seek a takeover, trying with utmost sincerity to transfer the club’s equity, not giving up a single opportunity to pass on the club,” it said. Amid reports of financial difficulties, Suning’s chairman Zhang Jindong earlier this month hinted at a pivot away from sport, in comments which also did not go unnoticed in Italy, where Inter are battling rivals AC Milan for the Serie A title. “We will focus on retail business resolutely and without hesitation will close and cut down our business irrelevant to retail,” he said.
